Nokia And Two Others Complete 5G Mobile Broadband With Almost 3Gbps Speed Record

Three telecom, Nokia, China Mobile (CMCC) and MediaTek has in a new joint trial been able to successfully achieve a new Standalone 5G (SA) download speed record of 2.94Gbps (Gigabits per second, in what would be termed as a fifth-generation technology breakthrough.

The trial achieved with the use of limited volume of spectrum set within the common 700MHz and 2.6GHz bands, even though the new trial wasn’t entirely as fast as some previous tests.

In a Press Release from the vendor, it stated:

“We achieved a new 5G Standalone speed record of almost 3Gbps in downlink throughput using Nokia’s commercial 5G Airscale portfolio, China Mobile’s network, and MediaTek’s mobile platform in Shanghai.”

The Press Release further revealed that the tripartite launch will give communication service providers the leverage to deliver higher, and faster inputs with better coverage to more users customers such as superior mobile broadband services and HD video.

The new trial which aligned the deployment of the 3 Components Carrier Aggregation technology with the 5G FDD spectrum from the a common 30MHz from the 700MHz / n28 band and the some 5G TDD spectrum (100+60MHz from the 2.6GHz / n41 band, had both bands used primarily in the United Kingdom even though the 2.6GHz band is currently running a 4G service.

The Nokia AirScale 5G baseband together with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 5G flagship mobile platform was used in the trial on the CMCC’s network and this would be the very first time the n28 (700MHz band; 30MHz) and n41 (2.6GHz band; 100+60MHz) frequency bands would be successfully combined to have a 190Mhz bandwidth (n28 + n41) with the use of carrier aggregation technology.

It would be recalled that in 2020, the previous 5G speed records tests had Nokia, Elisa and Qualcomm in the joint 8Gbps test with the recent trial slower in speed. The high speed level was in 2020 was  able to reach the levels with the use of higher radio frequencies in the millimetre Wave (mmW) bands.

But a major limitation of mmW bands is their extremely weak signals, which prevent them from moving far in a regular mobile environment, reducing their usefulness.

CMCC, a renowned global mobile operator, will be looking to build upon its strategic partnership with Nokia who is building out its network with the convergence of the 700MHz and 2.6GHz band.

“With CA technology, the spectrum advantages of these bands can be used to greatly improve the network performance and deliver a superior customer experience,” the company noted.
