NordVPN Launches Custom Protocol to Bypass Network Restrictions

On Thursday, NordVPN revealed a new VPN protocol. The new program, called NordWhisper, is intended to circumvent sophisticated network restrictions and disguise VPN data as ordinary web traffic. The most recent protocol functions differently from conventional VPN traffic patterns and is based on web tunnel technology. It is said to be able to get around network constraints and give consumers dependable, safe internet connection in difficult situations. Users are progressively being introduced to the NordWhisper protocol. The protocol should offer a “smoother and more consistent browsing experience” in settings with stringent internet security filters, like airports, cafes, offices, and schools. It functions differently from conventional VPN traffic patterns that network administrators can occasionally identify.

NordVPN announced the launch of NordWhisper in a blog post. Users may connect to VPN servers from networks that often restrict standard VPN traffic thanks to this new VPN protocol. Its foundation is Web tunnel technology, which functions differently from other VPN protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN.

According to the business, NordWhisper functions differently from more conventional VPN protocols like OpenVPN or WireGuard, which might be blocked because of their recognizable traffic patterns, by utilizing web tunnel technology. NordWhisper ensures dependable access on restricted networks while upholding rigorous encryption and security requirements by imitating normal web traffic to evade detection by network filters.

Web tunnel technology, on which the protocol is built, masks covert connection characteristics as normal internet traffic. In March 2024, the privacy-focused Tor Project unveiled a comparable bridging technology for their Tor Browser. Although NordVPN claims that the NordWhisper protocol “may work slower” than conventional VPN connections and should only be used when they are being blocked, the mimicking makes it more difficult for sophisticated network filters to detect VPN encryptions.

Although it isn’t anticipated to win any connection-speed competitions due to the nature of its operation, this new protocol should offer a “smoother and more consistent browsing experience” when attempting to connect in specific settings. NordWhisper was developed to circumvent the notoriously tight network filters used by companies, schools, airports, and cafés.

To make it harder for network filters to detect it, the new VPN protocol imitates normal online traffic. NordVPN claims that it maintains the same robust encryption and security as other VPN protocols while blending in with regular internet activity to get around blockages.

Even in areas with restrictions, NordWhisper is said to offer a more constant and seamless browsing experience. According to NordVPN, the new protocol was created especially for scenarios in which sophisticated network filters prevent the use of conventional VPN protocols. Usually used to block VPN use, these filters can be found at public Wi-Fi hotspots with security filters, such as those at airports, coffee shops, conferences, and other places where internet access is controlled.

According to NordVPN, the new protocol is a step in the direction of a more open internet. First, support for more platforms will be added “over time,” but then the NordWhisper protocol is made available to Linux, Android, and Windows users. It will progressively expand to new platforms. Users may choose it from the NordVPN app’s VPN connection settings whenever it becomes available. An ETA has not been given, however users can enable NordWhisper in the NordVPN app’s connection settings whenever it becomes available. When it happens, users of NordVPN will be able to activate the new protocol in the connection settings of the NordVPN app on their respective devices and browse seamlessly as they wish.

According to a comment from Marijus Briedis, CTO of NordVPN, “it’s not just about getting around network restrictions.” “It’s about giving people the freedom and security to work, communicate, and access basic services, even in the most restrictive environments.”
