How Often Should You Replace Your Electronic Devices and Appliances

In the past, purchasing a home appliance represented a major investment that you wouldn’t have to repeat in the years or even decades to come. Today, however, things have changed. First of all, in the past, household appliances were not nearly as numerous as they are today. Back in the olden days, you had a TV a refrigerator, a washing machine and a dishwasher, while today, it is a different story altogether.

Nowadays, more and more homes have espresso machines, robot vacuum cleaners and smart alarm systems. Needless to say, the more complex the machine, the greater the odds that something will break. This brings us to our first major question of the day – how often should you replace your electronic devices in order to keep your home functional at all times? Let’s find out!

Work hours instead of months

The first thing you need to keep in mind is that the time is relative and nowhere is this better described than with household appliances. Just take a look at an ordinary incandescent light bulb. This simple device is predicted to last for about 1000 hours which can be anywhere between a few years and one and a half month, depending on how often you turn it off. A similar comparison can be applied to your household devices, although, the numbers of working hours before malfunction usually aren’t available to the general public.

Because of this, your own demeanor in regard to these devices may play a crucial role in the way in the time you have before you have to replace them. Needless to say, this is definitely the most frugal option you have, seeing as how it both postpones a major investment and reduces the cost of your utility bill on a monthly basis. For this reason alone, you need to learn how to observe the age of your devices through work hours instead of months.

Avoiding downtime

Apart from learning how to estimate the life expectancy of your devices, you need to decide on your overall policy toward these appliances. To some people, the idea of having a downtime in a certain household function seems almost unimaginable, which is why they are inclined to completely replace the device at the first sight of malfunction. For this, it is vital that you know when your devices are expected to start misbehaving.

For instance, a quality coffee maker is expected to last around 5 years. As for the device such as a fridge, while it is believed that it can still be functional after 15 years, it isn’t that odd for it to start misbehaving as early as 8 years after you first purchase it.

Repairing instead of replacing

On the other hand, looking for a service to conduct an appliance repair is a much more frugal approach to this situation. First of all, it often buys years of functionality on your device, however, you need to be 100 percent sure that the repair is worth it. For instance, repairing a 20 years old washing machine is not such a great idea, while the same could be said for discarding a brand new TV right away.

Finally, you need to keep in mind that with some devices like TVs, phones and computers, it isn’t so easy to make a clean cut. You see, while the device may still be performing admirably, its features might already be completely outdated, which may significantly diminish their efficiency at their core tasks. This decision, however, needs to be weighed in carefully and with much consideration, seeing as how it may have a huge impact on your household budget in the long-run.
