OpenAI Adds Excel and PowerPoint File Support to ChatGPT

At the moment, ChatGPT allows users to create Excel or PowerPoint files, however the chat interface does not display these files.

The productivity features of ChatGPT are apparently being expanded by San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, which could drastically reduce users’ reliance on Microsoft Office products like PowerPoint and Excel.

It has been stated that OpenAI is working on new ChatGPT productivity tools that could lessen users’ dependency on Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel. According to the report, the artificial intelligence (AI) company based in San Francisco is working on integrating support for Microsoft’s presentation and spreadsheet file formats so that users may create and modify these files right within the chatbot’s interface. According to sources, the business is also developing an AI agent that can gather corporate or public data and produce in-depth reports. Interestingly, according to a different story, OpenAI is also building a web browser that uses artificial intelligence.

The startup is creating compatibility for Microsoft’s spreadsheet (.xlsx) and presentation (.pptx) file formats directly within ChatGPT’s UI, per a report from The Information. If live, this feature might eliminate the need for users to download these files in order to use them in other programs by allowing them to create, open, and modify these files natively.

It should be obvious to anyone using ChatGPT for productivity purposes that the AI chatbot can create presentations and spreadsheets in plain text. Users have the option to edit these files themselves or request inline updates from the AI by opening them in the Canvas mode.

Alternatively, users can request that ChatGPT create a PowerPoint (.pptx) or Excel (.xlsx) file directly, which can then be downloaded and opened using the appropriate program. Users are unable to create a new sheet in Canvas or open these files within the chatbot’s interface, though. Creating the file’s fundamental content in plain text, then converting it to an Excel or PowerPoint file and downloading it is the current solution.

However, that also presents a number of concerns. Since these are simple and plain text files, ChatGPT is unable to add any graphic components or animations to PowerPoint or add functions to Excel. The Information claims that OpenAI now intends to close this gap. The report claims that the AI company has created native support for xlxs and pptx file formats within ChatGPT, citing an unknown source who has utilized the new functionality.

Additionally, because Microsoft has made these file formats open-sourced, developing this feature does not violate any copyright laws. The research noted that these features could lessen customers’ need on Microsoft Office applications, but it did not provide any release dates for them.

According to the study, OpenAI is also developing an AI agent for ChatGPT that can generate reports (such as those in xlsx and pptx formats) using external data that has access to it (company data, uploaded files, connectors, etc.) or public data that are publicly available. The date of its release is also unknown. By merely instructing the chatbot, users would be able to generate thorough reports—possibly in PowerPoint or Excel formats—improving automation in data analysis and presentation.

These new features have not yet been given a release date, but their introduction may be a big step toward turning ChatGPT from a generative assistant into a complete productivity package. According to reports, the AI company is also looking into creating an internal web browser, which might pave the way for a more thorough integration of online data and document creation capabilities.
