OpenAI Adds Shopping Capabilities To ChatGPT Search

On Monday, OpenAI announced that it had improved ChatGPT’s web search features to enhance consumers’ online shopping experiences by offering individualized product recommendations along with photographs, reviews, and direct links to buy. Also, this is to provide users with a better online purchasing experience, OpenAI is improving ChatGPT search, its web search feature within ChatGPT.

With more than 1 billion web searches in the previous week, the search function of the generative AI pioneer has grown in popularity since its launch last year and is now one of its most sought-after features, according to the business.

Now, when customers search for products using ChatGPT, the chatbot will provide a few suggestions, show them pictures and reviews, and provide direct links to websites where they may make purchases. According to OpenAI, users can ask extremely detailed inquiries in natural language and get personalized answers. OpenAI is first experimenting with markets including electronics, fashion, cosmetics, and home goods.

On Monday, OpenAI will make the capability available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Free users as well as logged-out users worldwide in GPT-4o, the default AI model for ChatGPT.

The improvement to ChatGPT’s search engine is part of OpenAI’s strategy to take on rival Google by improving and personalizing the online product and information-finding experience. The advertising market to purchase priority placements in Google Search has also contributed to the product’s deteriorating quality over time, even though online shopping is one of Google’s most significant companies.

According to OpenAI, their search product is expanding quickly. Last week, ChatGPT users conducted over a billion web searches, the startup informed TechCrunch.

Ads are not included in this update to ChatGPT search, according to OpenAI, which claims to be independently determining ChatGPT shopping results. According to OpenAI, structured metadata from third parties, including product descriptions, prices, and reviews, will serve as the foundation for the shopping results. A kickback from purchases made using ChatGPT search will not be sent to the company.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has long opposed advertisements in ChatGPT, but he recently had a change of heart in an interview with Ben Thompson of Stratechery. Altman stated that he might be amenable to “tasteful” advertising in which OpenAI does not offer priority placement in their results but instead collects affiliate fees for sales made through ChatGPT.

According to OpenAI, its memory capability will soon be integrated with Pro and Plus customers’ purchasing. This means that ChatGPT will leverage a user’s past chat history to provide highly tailored product recommendations. ChatGPT was previously modified by the company to use RAM when conducting general online searches. Users in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, however, will not be able to utilize these memory functions.

Similar to Google Search’s autocomplete function, ChatGPT search will start to display trending searches as users begin typing a query. Additionally, ChatGPT search has been added to WhatsApp, enabling users to contact the chatbot for the company to receive the most recent responses.

Through its AI “agent” platform, Operator, OpenAI has previously investigated shopping functionalities. It can take a few seconds to several minutes to search through dozens of web pages and locate products that are interesting to users. Users can still utilize natural language queries to search for products with ChatGPT’s shopping feature, which provides a lot faster and more interactive experience.

The upgrade will be accessible in GPT-4o, its default AI model. All ChatGPT users worldwide, including those on the Pro, Plus, and Free tiers, as well as those who use the service without logging in, will be able to access it. When users ask particular inquiries, they will receive personalized product recommendations in categories such as technology, fashion, beauty, and home products.

According to OpenAI, the upgrade will not include any ads, and the business will not get paid for sales made via the ChatGPT platform.

According to the firm, structured metadata from third-party sources, including product descriptions, pricing, and reviews, will be used to independently determine the shopping results.

By offering a more user-focused alternative to Google’s heavily advertised search results, OpenAI is attempting to disrupt Alphabet’s and establish new tab supremacy in search.

According to a company official who talked to Reuters in February, OpenAI’s weekly active users jumped beyond 400 million.
