OpenAI has now released the Codex software for Windows devices, after the release of a dedicated Codex program for macOS a month ago. The artificial intelligence (AI) giant with headquarters in San Francisco stated on Wednesday that the software is now accessible in the Microsoft Store and that Windows developers can use it for agentic coding. All of the platform’s current capabilities, such as talents and the capacity to run several AI agents concurrently, will be available to users from launch.
The app is intended to act as a command centre for “agentic” software development and comes after the macOS debut in February.
The AI giant declared that the Codex app is now accessible on Windows in a post on X (previously known as Twitter), adding, “Get the full Codex app experience on Windows with a native agent sandbox and support for Windows developer environments in PowerShell.” The AI coding app is available in the Microsoft Store here for anyone who wants to give it a try.
Users can operate numerous AI agents concurrently across projects using the Codex app, which functions as a command centre for agentic software development. Without using workarounds like Windows Subsystem for Linux or virtual machines, developers may manage long-horizon activities, examine code differences in a single interface, and keep their current settings.
It’s interesting to note that OpenAI originally introduced Codex, a cloud-based software engineering agent, in April 2025. In order to convert natural-language prompts into code, suggest pull requests, correct issues, create tests, and assist with exploratory work across repositories, it uses large language models (LLMs) that have been optimised for coding. The Codex model can operate on jobs in a variety of computer languages, including Python, JavaScript, Go, and others. It powers applications like GitHub Copilot and the Codex CLI.
The same fundamental features that were added with the macOS release are supported by the app. Agents can be guided by users on challenging coding tasks, such as creating complete apps or troubleshooting extensive codebases. It manages multi-threaded operations, in which agents work together on several facets of a job at once. Like working with a team of expert developers, progress tracking and real-time guidance maintain transparency.
Notably, Windows users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans can take advantage of greater rate limitations and premium services, while those on the free and Go tiers can only access the basic functions.
The necessary prerequisites which is needed for accessibility of the app are;
- OS: Windows 10 (version 19041.0) or later is required.
- Access: Increased rate limitations for Plus, Pro, and Enterprise customers; free for all ChatGPT account holders, including those in the Free tier.
- Installation: Winget install –id 9PLM9XGG6VKS can be used to install it via the command line or straight from the Microsoft Store.
