OpenAI Executives to Review Microsoft Antitrust Allegations

Longtime partners OpenAI and Microsoft are apparently at odds to the extent that OpenAI officials have talked about charging Microsoft of anticompetitive activity and requesting a federal regulatory review of their contract conditions.

To finalize its transformation into a public-benefit organization, OpenAI needs Microsoft’s consent.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which cited persons familiar with the situation, OpenAI officials have contemplated charging Microsoft, the company’s largest investor, of engaging in anticompetitive behaviour in their collaboration.

According to the source, OpenAI may pursue a public campaign and a federal regulatory probe of the conditions of its deal with Microsoft for possible antitrust law violations.

In the rapidly expanding field of artificial intelligence (AI), such a move could jeopardize one of the most important tech alliances.

To finalize its transformation into a public-benefit organization, OpenAI needs Microsoft’s consent. However, despite months of discussions, the two have not been able to reach a consensus on specifics, according to insiders.

The businesses are reportedly debating changing the conditions of Microsoft’s investment, including the company’s future equity position in OpenAI.

According to a separate report by The Information, which quoted an individual who talked with OpenAI executives, OpenAI wants Microsoft to own a 33 percent ownership in a restructured subsidiary in exchange for giving up the right to future revenues.

According to the article, the owner of ChatGPT wants to change the current provisions that grant Microsoft the sole right to host OpenAI models on its cloud.

The Information claims that Microsoft has rejected OpenAI’s suggested terms and is looking for more concessions from the firm.

In a joint statement to Reuters, the companies said, “We are hopeful that we will continue to build together for years to come, and talks are ongoing.”

In 2019, Microsoft gave OpenAI $1 billion, or approximately Rs. 8,608 crore, to help the startup develop AI technology on its Azure cloud platform.

However, OpenAI has been searching for methods to lessen its need on the tech giant ever since. According to a Reuters story earlier this month, the corporation intends to incorporate Alphabet’s Google Cloud service to accommodate its expanding processing capacity requirements.
