OpenAI Extends Codex Integration To ChatGPT Apps On iOS & Android For Users

Codex is moving to a mobile platform, as OpenAI intends to incorporate it into the ChatGPT app as a form of a coding tool to enable users to remotely monitor and control their development workflows.

As a result of this, users can now seamlessly view their Codex live environments on any device where it is installed, all thanks to the new feature. The update, which is presently in preview, is now accessible for all iOS and Android plans, according to the company’s announcement on Thursday.

The main objective has shifted from ChatGPT to Codex as a result of OpenAI’s quest for market share in enterprise artificial intelligence (AI). The team, in an aggressive style, has upgraded and expanded Codex, while the flagship AI app has received a few small, significant upgrades. The San Francisco-based AI giant released the GPT-5.5-Cyber model, providing a safe sandboxing environment for Windows, to give an improved desktop application to support native PC use and online browsing over the last 30 days. Through the ChatGPT mobile app, the company is now bringing Codex to users’ smartphones.

The AI giant also revealed in a post that Codex is now available on iOS and Android through the ChatGPT mobile app. For the first time, OpenAI has made the coding environment available for platforms apart from the computers where it ever had existed. All plans, including the free tier, are presently able to access it in the preview section. Users are advised to simply update their app if Codex is not visible in the menu. Also, in the near future, the company aims to provide support for connecting the phone to the Codex app for Windows users.

The Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app serves as an extension of the desktop application rather than a stand-alone interface, despite the enlargement. Users must first log into the desktop version of the Codex app in order to access it on their phones. They can only then start the smartphone’s activation seamlessly.

The mobile extension, with respect to OpenAI, will enable users to collaborate across open threads, examine outputs and approve commands, modify models, and even begin new projects. However, it’s crucial to realize that Codex apps operate on the desktop application, and all updates, including screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approvals, are received in real time by the mobile interface.

OpenAI describes the experience of the Codex mobile app as “fully featured,” highlighting some number of things users are bound to do despite its limitations. The ChatGPT mobile app allows users to start new projects instantly and share ideas right away. Nevertheless, real-time development will not be available for display in the mobile view.

In addition, the Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app can instruct the chatbot to conduct varying tests to identify defects and possibly resolve problems it has encountered. Screenshots, test results, and terminal output are all visible to users. The enterprise also intends to allow them to examine the final discrepancy immediately on the smartphone in the future. For an ongoing project, the mobile interface of the coding platform can also be utilized to evaluate choices and make decisions.

In addition to this, last month, OpenAI enabled Codex to operate in the background in desktop contexts, enabling the tool to handle a variety of activities on its own. Additionally, the business released a Chrome extension earlier this month that enables the agent to work in real-time browser sessions.

A similar function called Remote Control, which enables users to keep an eye on Claude Code’s work from a distance, was introduced by Anthropic in February.

The perceived and intense rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic over which agentic coding tool will be the most popular is evident in the pace of feature releases from the two companies. Although both tools are still commonly used, Anthropic’s Claude Code has been more popular over the past year among the two computer workers and enterprises.
