For ChatGPT Pro users in the United States, OpenAI released a new set of personal finance capabilities in preview on Friday. These tools allow users to link their accounts and ask questions about anything from future financial planning to expenditure analysis.
The new personal finance tool from OpenAI will enable users to safely link their bank and investment accounts to ChatGPT. This innovative service uses real-time transaction data with GPT-5.5’s reasoning skills to provide highly customized financial advice.
To manage the account connections, OpenAI has teamed up with Plaid, a financial connection provider. Over 12,000 financial organizations, including Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One, are accessible to users. Users will see a dashboard showing their portfolio performance, spending, subscriptions, and impending payments after connecting these accounts.
The team behind the personal finance business Hiro, which was supported by companies like Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive, was acquired by OpenAI just one month before the launch of the new product. OpenAI stated that the Hiro team’s financial knowledge was helpful in the product’s introduction, but they did not say whether or not the entire feature was created by them.
The tool can be accessed by OpenAI users by typing “@Finances, connect my accounts” in a ChatGPT discussion or by choosing “Get started” in the “Finances” option in the sidebar. After that, the chatbot will instruct users on how to integrate their Plaid accounts. According to the firm, Intuit will soon be supported, enabling studies such as how a stock transaction will affect taxes or the likelihood of a credit card acceptance.
Over 200 million people already ask ChatGPT financial inquiries each month, according to OpenAI. The new GPT-5.5 model is better at reasoning with context, which is important for responding to inquiries about finances, according to the business. The business claimed that in order to improve the model’s performance on personal finance queries, it collaborated with financial professionals to develop a benchmark.
Users now receive comprehensive responses to inquiries like “I feel like I’ve been spending more recently” thanks to the new financial tool integration. “Has anything changed?” or “Assist me in creating a plan so that I can purchase a home in my neighbourhood within the next five years.”
If users would like to deactivate connections to certain accounts, they can navigate to Settings > Apps > Finances. The synchronised data will be deleted from ChatGPT within 30 days of the service being disconnected. Additionally, users can access and remove financial memories from the Finances tab.
People ask queries regarding data-sensitive subjects like health, finances, and personal life because generalized chatbots are made to respond to any question. Realising this, AI businesses are creating customized products for various industries. Health-related tools have been released by Anthropic and OpenAI. Perplexity introduced its own financial research product based on its computer agent earlier this month.
OpenAI announced that its personal finance features will be accessible for Pro users on iOS and ChatGPT on the web. It stated that before releasing the product to Plus users, it wants to make improvements based on the input from these consumers.
Also, users can unlink financial accounts or wipe financial memories at any time, and while the system has read-only access to analyse data for advice without moving funds, OpenAI notes that this feature is a planning tool and not a substitute for certified professional financial advice.
