ChatGPT, OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, gained a new study mode on Tuesday. Study Mode, which is the new feature of ChatGPT that intends to assist students in developing their own critical thinking abilities rather than only getting answers to questions, was unveiled by OpenAI. Without giving away the answers up front, this new mode is intended to help students with their homework, test preparation, and studying new subjects.
The new function, which is accessible to all logged-in users, breaks down difficulties, encourages students to solve them, and points them in the right direction by utilizing multiple learning frameworks. It’s interesting to note that the new functionality was introduced just a few weeks after Google unveiled Gemini for Education, a customized version of its chatbot.
When Study Mode is set and activated on the user’s device, ChatGPT will pose questions to users or anyone who seeks to gauge their comprehension and, in certain situations, will not provide direct responses until students actively interact with the content.
The San Francisco-based AI company revealed in a post that ChatGPT’s, OpenAI, starters that the Study Mode will be available to customers who are currently registered in ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. In the upcoming weeks, the business anticipates launching Study Mode for its ChatGPT Edu tier to subscribers, the majority of whom are young people whose school administrators have purchased a package for all of the students.
According to OpenAI, the study mode is a learning process in which users are guided step-by-step through the challenges by the chatbot.
Along with Canvas and Deep Research, this new mode is accessible through ChatGPT’s Tools menu. A new “Study and learn” option is visible here. By choosing this, the study mode will be activated, and the AI will no longer give direct solutions to queries but will instead ask the user to solve them.
OpenAI’s effort to reach the millions of students who employ the ChatGPT in the classroom is called Study Mode. According to studies, while ChatGPT can be a useful teacher for youth, it might also hinder their ability for critical thought. According to a study published in June, those who write essays using ChatGPT show less brain activity than those who use Google Search or do nothing at all.
The extensive use of ChatGPT in classrooms when it was initially introduced in 2022 alarmed teachers, and several school districts in the US banned generative AI as a result. Some of those schools lifted their ChatGPT prohibitions by 2023, and educators nationwide accepted that ChatGPT would now be a part of the life of young people.
OpenAI now intends to enhance ChatGPT as a learning tool rather than only a response engine with the introduction of Study Mode. In April, Anthropic released Learning Mode, a comparable capability for its AI chatbot Claude.
Of course, the actual effectiveness of Study Mode is limited. If students only need an answer to a question, they can quickly switch to ChatGPT’s standard mode. In a conference with a news agency, Leah Belsky, vice president of education at OpenAI, stated that the business does not provide tools for administrators or parents to force children into Study Mode. Belsky did note that OpenAI might eventually look into parental or administrative controls.
This implies that using Study Mode will require a dedicated student; children must genuinely want to learn, not just do their assignments.
The new tool, according to OpenAI, is driven by unique system instructions created by the company’s developers. These guidelines, which were developed in consultation with educators, scientists, and pedagogy specialists, are intended to foster curiosity, promote active engagement, and foster metacognition and self-reflection.
Study mode gives lessons tailored to the user’s grade and ability level, employs interactive prompts based on the Socratic questioning principle, divides knowledge into manageable chunks, and analyses the user’s progress using quizzes and open-ended questions. Users only need to tap on the option to turn the study mode on and off.
With the study mode, OpenAI is at last addressing the continuous debates over students’ use of AI and how it may impair their capacity to acquire and hone critical skills. However, this new mode lacks an account locking system and parental control, so there is no way to stop students from using ChatGPT to receive the answer if they so choose.
