A source revealed on Wednesday that OpenAI intends to introduce its Sora artificial intelligence video creation capabilities in ChatGPT, citing persons with knowledge of the preparations. This is part of a strategy change to increase user engagement, as OpenAI intends to “soon” directly integrate their Sora video production tool into ChatGPT.
The goal also is, in line with the order to counteract falling app momentum, the integration attempts to extend ChatGPT’s multimodal capabilities beyond text and graphics.
The action may raise the cost of the chatbot but is part of a larger strategy change at OpenAI to grow the number of its users.
In 2025, OpenAI developed Sora, a mobile app that lets users make and share AI-generated videos in a TikTok-like manner. However, by early 2026, the app was struggling with dwindling downloads and user spending after receiving some notice after its launch.
Sora installations plunged 45% month over month in January, according to a member of the press with a report from January that cited statistics from Appfigures. User spending also dropped precipitously.
This year, Sora fell out of the top 100 apps on Apple’s U.S. App Store and experienced a similar decline on Google’s Play Store.
The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI had an agreement for OpenAI to produce Sora films featuring the latter’s characters. However, it didn’t seem like the collaboration had much of an impact on consumption.
In the present situation, since late 2025, Sora has functioned as a stand-alone web and mobile application.
The strategy shift also involves integrating Sora into ChatGPT, the company has changed its focus from maintaining simplicity by keeping the tools apart to emphasising growth in spite of increased operating expenses.
Also, the feature set compared to the standalone software, the integrated version could have fewer sophisticated editing features.
The impact on subscriptions is that, in order to access larger video creation limits, more users are anticipated to switch to the premium ChatGPT Plus or Pro tiers.
