OpenAI has reportedly dismissed its vice president of product policy, Ryan Beiermeister, following an internal allegation of sex discrimination from a male colleague, according to a Wall Street Journal report cited by TechCrunch.
Beiermeister has denied the accusation. “The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false,” she told the Journal. At the time of TechCrunch’s publication, OpenAI had not commented publicly, and TechCrunch said it had not received a response from an email address believed to be associated with Beiermeister.
The reported firing comes as OpenAI prepares a new ChatGPT feature referred to internally as “adult mode.” The feature is described as introducing erotica into the chatbot experience for users.
According to the Journal’s account, Beiermeister’s termination followed her criticism of the planned “adult mode.” The report says she and other employees raised concerns about how an adult-focused feature could affect certain users, though it does not detail the specific risks or user groups discussed.
The planned launch of “adult mode” has been confirmed publicly by OpenAI executive Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, who oversees the company’s consumer-facing products. Simo has told reporters that OpenAI expects to roll out the feature in the first quarter of this year.
TechCrunch reports that Beiermeister was fired in January after a period of leave of absence. In response to the situation, OpenAI has reportedly said that she “made valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI, and her departure was not related to any issue she raised while working at the company.”
Beyond her tenure at OpenAI, Beiermeister’s LinkedIn profile lists more than four years on Meta’s product team and over seven years at Palantir, reflecting a career shaped around complex product and policy environments at large tech firms.
With questions now swirling around OpenAI’s internal handling of policy disputes and upcoming product changes, the company has yet to offer further public detail beyond its brief statement as reported by the Journal.
