OpenAI is extending a significant coding boost to thousands of developers who could not get into its upcoming invite-only GPT-5.5 event, offering a temporary but substantial upgrade to Codex usage inside ChatGPT.
On Monday, the company began emailing more than 8,000 developers who signed up for its GPT-5.5 party with a “consolation” benefit; a tenfold increase in Codex rate limits on their personal ChatGPT accounts. The higher limits take effect immediately and run through June 5, according to an email seen by VentureBeat.
“We had over 8,000 people express interest in just 24 hours, and while we wish our office was big enough to welcome everyone, we weren’t able to make space for every person who applied,” OpenAI wrote in the message. “As a small token of appreciation, we’ve 10x’ed your Codex rate limits until June 5th on your personal ChatGPT account.”
The gesture follows strong demand for the GPT-5.5 event, which was set up as an invite-only gathering. Interest quickly exceeded OpenAI’s venue capacity, prompting the company to use Codex access as a way to include more developers in the rollout around its latest model.
The boosted Codex allowance is not reserved only for people who ultimately made the cut for the party. According to the email and reports from multiple recipients on social media, everyone who applied — whether they were accepted, put on a waitlist, or rejected is getting the same tenfold increase in rate limits.
That means thousands of developers now have a month-long window of expanded access to Codex inside their personal ChatGPT accounts, regardless of their event status.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman signalled the move shortly before the emails went out. Posting on X, he wrote: “We are gonna do something nice for everyone who applied for the GPT-5.5 party and that we didn’t have space for. Hope you enjoy!” The post drew more than 521,000 views within hours.
What the Codex boost enables
Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding agent, is subject to daily usage caps that differ based on subscription tier. OpenAI did not detail the underlying numbers in the email, but a tenfold increase effectively multiplies those existing daily limits for eligible developers for the duration of the offer.
OpenAI frames this one-month window as a practical opportunity for developers to do more with its latest model, GPT-5.5. With higher Codex ceilings, developers can:
- Run more intensive coding sessions without hitting daily caps as quickly
- Prototype and iterate on projects using GPT-5.5-backed coding assistance
- Spend more time on debugging and refining code within ChatGPT
OpenAI describes GPT-5.5 as matching GPT-5.4’s per-token latency, while maintaining its own performance characteristics. Within that context, the temporary rate increase gives developers more room to explore how the newer model behaves on real coding tasks, and to assess how it fits into their workflows.
Because the boost applies on personal ChatGPT accounts rather than a separate environment, developers can test GPT-5.5’s Codex capabilities directly in the interface they already use for everyday work, subject to their upgraded daily caps.
The offer is time-limited; the tenfold Codex rate increase remains in place until June 5, after which usage limits are expected to return to their usual levels for these accounts.
