Following a morning outage on Friday, January 16, 2026, on the social media platform X that caused tens of thousands of users to report problems with both the desktop and app versions of the website, service was mostly restored to X on Friday afternoon. It was said to have had a global impact, affecting hundreds of thousands of users worldwide. After an earlier issue on January 13, this was the platform’s second significant service interruption in a single week.
Soon after 10 a.m. ET, complaints reported by outage tracker DownDetector started to surpass “typical” numbers. Nearly 80,000 users nationwide had reported problems by 10:15 a.m.
When a user tries to see a post, the notification “Something went wrong” appears. “Try loading again.”
One Reddit user complained about a purported X outage that happened earlier this week, saying, “Here we go again.”
The outage tracker indicates that shortly after the initial increase, records of outages at DownDetector started to decline, but soon after 10:45 a.m. ET, they shot up to almost 65,500. After then, the number of outage reports rapidly decreased.
By the afternoon, most users seemed to have their service back.
As of late Friday, neither X Corp. nor the CEO of xAI, the company that controls X, Elon Musk, has not made any public remarks regarding Friday’s outage’s precise cause. However, it was learnt that some systems were degraded, which was mentioned in passing on the X Developer Platform status page.
The X outage on Friday comes after Verizon users experienced another significant service interruption on Wednesday, when they reported being unable to make calls or trapped in “SOS” mode. After apologising for the interruptions, the cell carrier gave impacted customers $20 in credits.
The possible reasons and the official reaction have been seen to be infrastructure problems, as some users experienced Cloudflare error pages (connection ran out), indicating technical issues with key internet infrastructure, even if X did not offer an official explanation.
This X outage will make it the second outage experienced by X in January 2026.
The peak reports shows that just after 10:00 a.m. ET, outage tracker Downdetector saw a sharp increase in reports. Reports peaked at over 20,000 in the UK and almost 80,000 in the US.
The cause, according to users, was that they reported receiving error messages such as “Something went wrong” instead of being able to browse posts or load feeds. Try reloading if you see screens that are entirely blank.
The affected services which were noticed were that the desktop website and the mobile app were both affected by the outage. Additionally, thousands of users reported problems with Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok. While the duration, according to most customers, had full restoration by Friday afternoon, however, services started to flicker back to life within an hour. You can visit the official X Status page or Downdetector for real-time updates and to report ongoing problems.
