Periscope Introduces Interactive 360º Live Videos with Certain Limitations

In the continually evolving arena of live streaming services, Twitter’s Periscope has made a bold step forward. The popular app announced today that it has extended support to the broadcasting of live 360-degree videos, creating an interactive viewing experience like never before.

As stated in a blog post by Twitter, viewers will now be able to engage with the environment of prominent broadcasters and gain unparalleled backstage access to exclusive events. The feature creates scope for a dynamically immersive exploration of the broadcaster’s world, allowing viewers to adjust their own perspective within the live video stream.

However, this exciting feature comes with a considerable caveat. As of now, the creation of these 360-degree videos is not an open option for every user. It is exclusively available only to a select group of Periscope’s trusted partners. While this may serve as a disappointment for many, it’s an incentive for users to enjoy the innovative content created by these chosen creators.

Starting today, users can expect to spot these live 360-degree videos marked with an exclusive LIVE 360 badge. The badge is not just an emblem, but an invitation for viewers to engage actively with the content. By tilting their phone or swiping across their screen, viewers can change their viewing angle within the video—while still watching the unfolding events live.

While Periscope has not yet disclosed the list of partners who have been given the privilege to create this dynamic content, companies that are interested to join the roster can sign up on thewaiting list. Considering the requirement of specialized high-resolution cameras to generate these 360-degree videos, it is sensible to limit its accessibility, keeping in mind both the practicality and the quality of user experience.
