SpaceX’s Pioneering Lunar Voyage: Private Citizens to Orbit the Moon in 2018

SpaceX, under the aegis of the dynamic visionary Elon Musk, has announced a monumental mission: flying two private citizens to the moon in late 2018. At this stage, the identities of these lunar tourists remain shrouded in mystery; however, what we do know is the spacecraft that will facilitate their journey.

They will be aboard the advanced Dragon 2 spacecraft, an improved version of SpaceX’s original Dragon capsule. The Dragon series was largely funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a stalwart patron of private space exploration and investment.

Originally, the first-generation Dragon was designed to serve the International Space Station (ISS) as an interstellar truck of sorts, ferrying supplies and astronauts. However, its successor – the Dragon 2, an unmanned spacecraft – is set to commence its ventures into space later this year.

This pioneering journey, if successful, paves the way for an epoch-making event. It would mean humans venturing into deep space for the first time in 45 years, a historic launch to be directed from the iconic Kennedy Space Centre.

Amidst a growing constellation of private space companies, SpaceX stands out, potentially being the first enterprise to make such a significant stride. This development forecasts a future where space exploration is democratized beyond government establishments, fostering a wave of private enterprise-led interplanetary exploration.

Elon Musk has been instrumental in making space exploration palatable and fascinating for the public. Last year, he conjured a captivating spectacle of what a journey to Mars might entail, as well as an estimate of the possible costs involved in such a mission.

As SpaceX gears up for the remarkable lunar journey, this pending mission articulates a tangible manifestation of what was once solely the stuff of science fiction. It evokes a sense of awe as we look towards the uncharted expanses of space, a testament to the indomitable spirit of human exploration.

In this exciting era of private space travel, SpaceX continues to inspire, revealing the boundless possibilities that lie within our cosmic neighborhood. With every successful mission, they inch us closer to becoming not just inhabitants of Earth, but citizens of the universe.
