Samsung Will Give Three Years Software Support To Existing Galaxy Watches, Regardless Of Google Partnership

Google and Samsung have clearly taken their relationship to a higher level as both companies recently announced a collaboration in the production of smartwatches and wearables. At Google’s annual developer conference, Google announced that it is merging its Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen OS. Both companies will be coming together to make a joint software platform for smartwatches and other wearables. Samsung itself confirmed that the next generation Galaxy Watch will run on this new platform and this will even ship with future high end Fitbit devices as well. This means Samsung will use Google’s Wear OS for its upcoming Galaxy smartwatches instead of its own Tizen OS.

The new version of Google’s wearable software dubbed Wear is expected to roll out on existing smartwatches manufactured by various companies like Mobvoi, Fossil and others. But this is not this case with Samsung. Nevertheless, Samsung users are not without hope.

Samsung has announced that it will give three years of software support to existing Galaxy watches. The company affirmed this in an official blog post where it stated that it will offer at least three years of support and update to its Tizen-based Galaxy smartwatches.

The timeline for this three year of support for Tizen-based Galaxy smartwatches will start from the time of the product launch. A product that was launched in 2020, will get software updates till August 2023; the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 for example.

In an official blog post, the company explained, “At Samsung, we always put customers at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we are committed to bringing them the best possible smartwatch experiences. For customers who already own the Tizen OS based Galaxy smartwatches, we are continuing to provide at least three years of software support after the product launch”.

The new software for smartwatches and other wearables, will be powered by Android, and Google has not yet confirmed the update timelines for smartwatches. Samsung, on the other hand, has also not confirmed its plans to completely do away with the Tizen OS.
