Samsung Leads Another Breakthrough in 5G Technology Tests

Since Samsung first catapulted into the 5G race with its benchmark success, the unfolding tale of contouring the shape of the next generation telecom technology has been nothing short of extraordinary. The premier electronics giant had masterfully announced the achievement of transmission speeds reaching up to 940MB per second in a stationary or indoor environment, assertions which sent ripples across the tech world.

Understanding that realizing the 5G dream in the real world – an uncontrolled environment – would be a colossal task, Samsung’s proposed ‘5G Rainbow’ sought to inspire and engage further dialogue on the development of a uniform standard for this emergent technology. They promptly identified seven primary categories meriting detailed discussion: data rate, spectral efficiency, data transmission, simultaneous connections, and cost amongst others.

Two years fast-forwarded from Samsung’s assertion in 2014 and 3GPP, the international organization responsible for developing such telecom standards, announced that June 2018 was the targeted date for the release of 5G radio standards. As Dino Flore, Chairman of 3GPP TSG RAN, succinctly put it, “We now have a more concrete plan to guide the studies in the Working Groups and to put us in the position to address both short term and long term opportunities of 5G.”

Shifting the story to the present, Samsung and China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) have successfully executed a 5G test in June 2016. In their press release, they announced, “key technologies like spatial modulation and FBMC (Filter Bank Multicarrier) have been validated for the low-frequency (3.5GHz), during the test. The performance of throughput, outband emission were tested with Samsung’s ultra-high frequency 5G prototype system and devices powered by advanced beam forming technology.”

Over time, Samsung has also achieved triumphant results in handover in multi-cell mmWave networks, a feat which is not a stand-alone as industry powerhouses Verizon and AT&T have both announced their plans to test the feasibility of deploying the lightning-fast 5G technology on their networks.

With the rapid pace of advancements and breakthroughs, we find ourselves on the galloping hooves of technological advancement, briskly heading into the era of 5G.
