Samsung’s Gear S smartwatch doesn’t need a phone to get online or make calls

Samsung recently unveiled another addition to its smartwatch repertoire – the Gear S (not to be confused with Solo). Its unique feature is that it boasts an internal 3G modem. As a result, you don’t need a Bluetooth-connected phone or Wi-Fi to send/receive messages or make calls, albeit with modest speed. Complementing its 2-inch AMOLED screen is a dual-core 1GHz CPU, GPS, heart rate, and motion sensors, all powered by a 300mAh battery that promises a lifespan of up to two days.

The Gear S deviates from the standard Android Wear, favoring Tizen instead. It enables pedestrian navigation courtesy of Nokia’s HERE and lends support for Facebook. On the eve of IFA, Samsung also unveiled the Gear Circle headset, a Bluetooth-enabled device that allows users to take heed of notifications, listen to music, or use voice commands via the built-in earbuds.

Sales of both gadgets started in October, with their prices remaining undisclosed. The Gear S caters to an array of fitness tracking needs, thanks to its compatibility with Samsung’s S Health or Nike+ Running. It’s resistant to dust and water, boasting 4GB storage and 512MB RAM. The Gear Circle teems with innovative elements too, like a magnetic clasp that fits around the neck for convenience, a touch sensor, and an impressive 11-hour talk-time battery. A hands-on look at both devices at the forthcoming IFA 2014 show in Berlin will bring more clarity on whether these wearables will become essentials in our gadget arsenal or fashion collection.
