Nokia Announces Its Unexpected Entry into Android Tablet Market

In a surprising turn of events, Nokia is set to launch an Android-powered tablet. The announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft’s recent move to drop the Nokia brand from its smartphone lineup, which it had acquired earlier this year. This transition led us to cover the unveiling of the Microsoft Lumia 535, a budget-friendly smartphone running on a Windows operating system, just last week.

The imminent tablet, aptly named N1, is expected to hit the Chinese market towards the beginning of 2015 before it is rolled out to other countries. Shedding some light on the pivotal development, Sebastian Nystrom, the Head of Products at Nokia, emphasized, “This is an excellent product for Nokia fans and for those who are yet to find their perfect Android tablet.”

The making of the N1 tablet isn’t a solo venture by Nokia. The Finnish company has licensed its brand, design, and software to Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn. This strategic arrangement will help Nokia maintain quality control while avoiding the complexities of manufacturing and supply chain management. This, in turn, could pave the way for the brand to reclaim its erstwhile glory in the world of smart devices.

Diving into the technical aspects, the N1 will be harnessing the power of Android 5.0 Lollipop, with an Intel Atom processor under the hood for efficient multitasking. It will also feature a Micro-USB slot for seamless file transfer and device charging. The entry price for the tablet is set at $249 (approximately ₦44,000), which is highly competitive when compared to other tablets in its range.

Analysts believe that the burgeoning smartphone market, particularly in emerging economies, represents a significant opportunity for Nokia to reinvent itself. The partnership with Foxconn and the strategic pricing of the N1 could potentially attract a substantial customer base. However, it remains to be seen whether it will create a disruptive impact in the already crowded tablet market.

We eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the N1 tablet and will keep you updated with relevant developments as they unfold.
