Description: Caring for seniors is a time-consuming and responsible task. Fortunately, plenty of smart homes systems and solutions can alleviate this challenge. Automated, remotely controlled homes will make lives easier for the elderly and their caretakers.

Today, life expectancy is increasing thanks to developments in medicine and technology. Any innovator will tell you that the main goal of any technology is increasing life’s quality. This statement is especially true for smart homes. Smart home technology makes our lives easier and helps us take care of seniors. Here are just examples of how smart homes can make their lives safer and easier.

Biomedical Monitoring Devices

While not exactly an example of smart technology for homes, biomedical monitoring is the founding stone when it comes to taking care of our seniors. One of the main reasons to consider these smart gadgets is that they ensure 24/7 control over seniors’ health. Inside or outside of the home, these smart devices can send timely alarms to the caregiver. In some cases, a timely reaction to critical conditions can make the difference between life and death. Besides, all data stored on these smart devices can be analyzed by medical staff, contributing to better health diagnostics.

Now that we have the most important smart gadget covered, let’s move on to smart homes technology and its perks for our loved ones.

Smart Home Lighting Automation

Lighting is a great smart homes automation tool to prevent a whole range of problems and decrease accident risk. In today’s smart homes, lights can come with motion sensors or voice control. Another option is to operate lights over a smartphone and Wi-Fi connection. However, app-controlled lighting may not be as convenient for those seniors who are not very tech-savvy.

Smart Home Smoke Sensors

Smart smoke sensors are great for every homeowner, not just for seniors. These smart homes systems deliver an audible siren whenever they detect smoke. Of course, seniors with impaired hearing may not always hear the alarm, especially in a large home. So, it’s great that today’s smart devices can also send a warning to a gadget and inform caretakers of any dangerous incidents.

Water and Gas Leak Sensors

Another great example of smart technology that makes our homes safer. Water and especially gas leak sensors are perfect for those who want to stay on the safe side of things at all costs. Gas sensor alarms can prevent catastrophic accidents, and a timely reaction to water leakage can save quite a lot of money on costly repairs.

Smart Home Locks

Smart locks have their pros and cons for the elderly but still can be considered in some cases. In particular, they come in very handy for people who often forget if they locked the door. With a smart lock, anyone can check it from the comfort of their bed or the nearest convenience store. They can also prove handy for people who sometimes forget their keys at home. On the other hand, the forgetful may leave their phones behind or forget the passcode combination for the lock. So, this example of smart home technology may not work for everyone.

Contact Sensors

Contact sensors are designed for seniors suffering from dementia. Often, these people can wander from their homes and forget their way back. Setting up smart contact sensors on the perimeter can send immediate alerts to caretakers. The same smart homes technology of the future can be installed on doors and windows, providing information if any of those doors are open or closed. Usually, these monitors are tied into security smart home platforms of their own, but some are also compatible with smartphones.

Heating Automation

Just like lights, heating systems can be automated. Remote control of the heating systems has its perks for younger people as well — especially those who travel a lot and can heat their home on their way back from a long trip. For seniors, these smart home heating systems can save a lot of effort in their daily routines, which is a huge bonus for people with reduced mobility. These systems can be integrated with a smartphone or come with a voice control system.

Full-Scale Security Systems

Security cameras are one of the first examples of smart homes solutions that are still relevant today. With their help, it is easy to monitor who’s coming and going and send timely alarms, including to the police. Doorbell home cameras transmitting video can also be very useful.

Bonus: Medical Reminders

Today, most smartphones can send reminders about daily tasks. Some apps are specifically designed for medication schedules. Some of the more advanced ones even come with visuals to show caretakers that the senior has taken the correct medicine.

All in all, implementing full-scale, smart homes Insteon automation systems where all appliances and sensors work in perfect harmony is a great idea. Smart homes are great places to live in —both for the younger and older generations. But, in seniors’ case, this technology may often mean the difference between life and death, not just between comfort and extra comfort.
