Snapchat Surpasses Twitter in Daily Active Users: A Significant Milestone in the Social Media Landscape

Bloomberg recently [reported](http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-06-02/snapchat-passes-twitter-in-daily-usage) in a fascinating piece of news, a significant shift in the social media landscape. The four-year-old messaging platform Snapchat has surpassed Twitter, one of the foundational giants of the social media world in terms of daily active users. Recently valued at a towering $18 billion, or 5.7tr Naira, Snapchat now boasts a daily user count of 150 million, breezing past Twitter’s 140 million active users per day.

Snapchat has rapidly ascended the ranks to become a fan favorite among its audience, particularly owing to its unique auto-delete feature that removes a message once it has been opened. This innovative form of transient messaging, as Twitter’s Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey highlighted on Wednesday at Recode’s technology conference, represents a “very modern” mode of communication.

Despite these technology advancements, Twitter continues to be the leading platform for corporate announcements. Over the past few years, there have been concerted efforts to restructure Twitter’s administration, marking the return of Jack Dorsey to the platform. Twitter’s proposed changes, including plans to exclude @names and special characters from the 140-character limit among others, are clearly aimed at keeping pace with evolving norms in social media. However, despite a sizeable user base of 310 million, Twitter’s advertising revenue still leaves something to be desired by investors.

Now larger than Twitter in terms of user count, Instagram is another service gaining ground on the social media battlefield. By official statistics from Facebook, Instagram’s parent company, the photo sharing app has amassed an impressive 400 million users.

Snapchat also appears to be gaining traction in the realm of video, as seen in this [report](https://www.techbooky.com/post-title/snapchat-hits-the-4-billion-threshold-for-video-views) from last year. At the tail end of September, Snapchat was pulling in a staggering four billion video views per day, thus positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Facebook’s video platform at the time.

This new shift is indicative of Snapchat’s growing clout in the social media landscape and how tech companies constantly strive to innovate and meet changing consumer demands. Indeed, the numbers speak for themselves, Snapchat’s rise is one to behold.
