Sony Announces A Slimmer PS5 Model With Detachable Disc Drive

Sony has recently made waves in the gaming world by officially announcing a new variant of its highly sought-after PS5 console. This new model, often colloquially referred to as the “PS5 Slim,” brings with it some exciting changes and a more affordable option for gamers.

The standout feature of this new PS5 is the detachable disc drive, offering a significant shift from the previous models. While maintaining the impressive 1TB of internal storage, this feature allows gamers to decide whether they want a disc drive or not. In the US, the new model comes in two versions – one with the drive included for $499.99 and another without it, priced at $449.99. This flexibility is a win for gamers who may prefer a digital-only experience or want the versatility of physical discs.

The design of the new PS5 isn’t just about detachability; it’s also more compact. With over a 30 percent reduction in volume and a weight decrease of up to 24 percent (depending on the model), Sony has made the PS5 more manageable for users. Additionally, the side of the PS5 now features a removable bulge housing the disc drive, which can be switched out with a side panel.

As Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, explains, “There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte.” This design element not only adds a touch of sophistication but also offers personalization options for users.

For those purchasing the base PS5 Digital Edition, Sony offers an intriguing feature: the ability to add the Blu-ray disc drive at a later date. This drive can be purchased separately for $79.99 (€119.99 / £99.99), making it a cost-effective solution for those who may change their preferences over time.

The changes don’t end there. The new PS5 model boasts two slits on each side and dual USB-C ports at the front, enhancing connectivity options. A horizontal stand is included with the new model, and Sony is selling a separate vertical stand that works with all PS5 models for $29.99 (€29.99 / £24.99 GBP).

Furthermore, both new PS5 models come with a significant upgrade in storage, now offering 1TB compared to the 825GB found on the existing PS5.

Gamers in the US will be the first to get their hands on the new PS5 model, with a release in November at select retailers and on Sony’s PlayStation Direct site. Pricing is set at $449.99 for the Digital Edition and $499.99 with the drive. As Sid Shuman mentions, it will eventually become the only available model globally once the current PS5 inventory sells out.

In Europe, the pricing is €449.99 for the Digital Edition and €549.99 with the drive, while in the UK, it’s £479.99 with the drive or £389.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition.

The official announcement of this updated PS5 model comes after months of speculation and reports of Sony’s detachable drive project. It’s worth noting that Sony recently concluded its first PS5 sale, offering steep price reductions in various regions around the world.
