Sony has raised the bar in the world of gaming consoles with its announcement of a significant upgrade to the PlayStation 4, now bearing the name PlayStation 4 Pro (formerly code-named Neo). This news had its initial echo back in June, the same month we received updates on the much-anticipated release date for the PlayStation VR, which is scheduled for launch on the 13th of October.

Time to dive into what the new PlayStation 4 Pro has to offer to avid gamers:

  • Support for 4K resolution, improving the visual experience to an unparalleled new height.
  • Advanced graphics that can handle the most graphically-demanding games efficiently.
  • An accelerated processor to substantially cut down game load times.
  • A more streamlined model, making it lighter and slimmer than the original PS4.
  • Support for Netflix and YouTube 4K content, with a new app from Netflix launching at the same time as the PS4 Pro, while a YouTube 4K-compatible app is under development.

For gamers without HDTVs that support 4K resolution, do not fret. All games on the new PS4 Pro will also run seamlessly in 1080p resolution. Sony additionally confirmed that several developers are working on updating previously launched PS4 games to add PS4 Pro support. Simultaneously, other developers are building PS4 Pro support into their forthcoming titles. At launch, players can look forward to downloading patches for certain games, such as Uncharted 4, which are specifically enhanced for this new console. Upcoming releases set to incorporate PS4 Pro support include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Days Gone.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has unveiled some of their virtual reality ambitions with the announcement of Project Scorpio, their very own Virtual Reality (VR) console launching next year.

Although the original PS4 is only three years into its lifecycle, this upgrade certainly marks a welcome evolution for gaming enthusiasts. The PS4 Pro is slated to be available from the 10th of November and comes with a price tag of $399 or about 167,000 Naira. Prepare your wallets, gamers – a new era of console gaming is just on the horizon.
