Sony Uncertain About 2025 PlayStation Showcase Plans

This summer, Sony may decide to offer information on forthcoming titles during a smaller State of Play event rather than hosting a full-length PlayStation Showcase. According to reports, the corporation has not yet finalized its plans for a showcase event in the summer. In addition to third-party announcements, the PlayStation parent company’s State of Play program last week included the next title from first-party studio Housemarque.

Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb provided the information and a well-known industry source who has correctly leaked several PlayStation events in the past, stated that Sony is debating whether to have a PlayStation Showcase or a standard State of Play at its next summer event. He also claims that Sony has not yet chosen whether to have a State of Play event or a full-length PlayStation Showcase in the summer of 2025.

Internally, it seems that they are struggling to decide whether to do another State of Play or even make anything a complete showcase this summer which seems like they’re arguing, vacillating between, perhaps turning anything this summer into a complete showcase in contrast to another State of Play. However, Grubb stated on his Game Mess Decides podcast on Friday that they are thinking about doing a showcase.

In terms of presentation and the kinds of games offered, State of Plays are usually far more limited than PlayStation Showcases for those who are unfamiliar with them.

The presence of a showcase implies that they will have a lot to discuss. You would therefore undoubtedly anticipate seeing Wolverine along with a number of other games that may be released the following year.

Larger presentations centred on first-party announcements and reveals are known as PlayStation Showcase events. In contrast, a State of Play program is shorter and mostly consists of statements from third parties. While the State of Play broadcast occurs three to four times a year, the PlayStation Showcase is usually presented once a year.

Naughty Dog officially unveiled their upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while other of Sony’s first-party developers are actively working on their future projects. Santa Monica has not yet revealed its upcoming game, and Insomniac Games is working on Wolverine at The Game Awards 2024 in December. In the meantime, Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, by Sucker Punch, will be released in 2025.

However, Grubb stated that at a games showcase event this year, Sony may still make some “fun announcements” and begin “bolstering expectations for 2026”.

It’s also important to remember that the last PlayStation Showcase was held in 2023 and lasted for well over an hour, and the main announcement with games like Helldivers II, FairGame$, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Spider-Man 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and dozens more which would be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on August 28, 2025. The last State of Play was just a few days ago. At the presentation, Sony also gave a detailed preview of the gameplay for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Last week, Sony’s State of Play show mostly consisted of announcements and trailers from third parties. However, the business did disclose Housemarque’s upcoming first-party game, which is developed by Returnal. In 2026, the company will release Saros, a third-person roguelike bullet-hell action-adventure game, exclusively for the PS5.

PlayStation enthusiasts may have a lot to anticipate later this summer in terms of announcements if Sony decides to move forward with a full-on PlayStation Showcase.

In spite of this, State of Plays is still entertaining, so maybe Sony will have a number of entertaining, original, and brand-new games to showcase in the coming months.

Furthermore, at the rumoured 2025 PlayStation Showcase, Sony may reveal new information about first-party games such as Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Santa Monica Studio’s new IP, Guerrilla Games’ Horizon co-op game, Haven Studios’ Fairgames, etc. Additionally, director Gregory Louden teased the gameplay for Housemarque’s recently revealed Saros at the recent February State of Play presentation.
