American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company; SpaceX founded by Technoking and CEO of Electric Vehicle company; Tesla, announces plans to launch a “DOGE-1 Mission to the Moon” by the first quarter of next year. The company is accepting ‘joke cryptocurrency’; Dogecoin based on the Shiba Inu dog, as full payment for the lunar payload.

This was announced on Sunday by Geometric Energy Corporation and was confirmed in an email issued to reporters. While the financial details of this space mission were not revealed, the mission has been named “DOGE-1Mission to the Moon”.

According to Geometric Energy Corporation, the mission entails flying a 40kg cube satellite as a payload on a Falcon 9 rocket. The company explained that its payload “will obtain lunar-spatial intelligence from sensors and cameras on-board with integrated communications and computational systems”

In a statement by Tom Ochinero; the Vice President of SpaceX Commercial Sales, DOGE-1 “will demonstrate the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth orbit and set the foundation for interplanetary commerce”

In a tweet by the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX on April 1st of this year, he announced that the company was making plans on taking DOGE to the moon. As at that time, it wasn’t totally clear what this meant and was taken as another crazy idea. His tweet read, “Space X is going to put a literal Dogecoin on the literal moon”.

Dogecoin went up after Elon Musk’s appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live as a result of his references to the currency. The DOGE-1 mission appeared barely 24 hours after Elon Musk’s appearance on the show.

Elon Musk is known for his influence especially in the crypto-verse. Thanks to his influence and involvement, Bitcoin saw an astronomical growth from last year to this one.

Elon Musk has also added the title of “Dogefather” to his titles and it seems like he is going to put Dogecoin on the literal moon, just as he said he would via tweet.
