Here is one big news from the new year and it is that Elon Musk’s Starlink will allow phones to access satellite internet without hardware support. This comes after the partnership with Rogers Communications after the launch of satellite service in Canada. Asides from this Starlink also signed a deal with Airtel Africa.

Using satellites with built-in modems (eNodeBs) that function as space-based cell towers, Starlink’s “Direct to Cell” service allows standard 4G LTE smartphones to connect directly to orbiting Starlink satellites for basic connectivity (texting, voice, and data) in dead zones without requiring new hardware. By relaying signals to ground stations via the satellite constellation, this service expands the reach of current mobile networks and provides coverage in rural places.

By connecting phones directly to its satellites, SpaceX intends to do away with SIM cards and roaming. In this scenario, your smartphone will establish a direct connection with satellites in orbit around the planet, enabling internet access in places without dependable network coverage.

The idea has the potential to alter global internet connectivity. It will require significant technical work, money, and time to make the vision a reality.

One of the biggest satellite spectrum sales ever documented occurred in September 2025 when SpaceX announced a $17 billion agreement to purchase wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar. The AWS-4 and H-block bands, which are essential for 4G and 5G mobile networks, are included in the transaction. By connecting directly to regular mobile phones using these frequencies, Starlink satellites will be able to avoid cell towers and increase coverage globally.

It works when an unmodified phones can communicate with modems (eNodeBs) carried by special Starlink satellites that imitate terrestrial cell towers. And there will be need for direct connection, when users are outside of regular network coverage, users phone tends to establish a connection with the satellite as it passes overhead. There is also a signal relay which will be used to facilitate communication and then the satellite transmits the signal to a ground station and then your carrier’s network. There will be no new equipment as users current phone, firmware, and apps function; the satellite, not your device, bears the strain.

The key features which are the essential services first with aspirations to add voice and data, it begins with texting and emergency services. The partnerships to contributes to the networks of mobile carriers, such as T-Mobile and Airtel. Also global reach will strives to encompass distant regions, deserts, and oceans.

As for now the service is launching with limited messaging functionality at first, and it will grow over time. It requires to see the sky well.
