StarTimes is currently in a partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Chapter, to train the women in the organisation.  The training is currently underway in Abuja and will come to an end today, November 29.

Titled ‘Gender Equality and Safety’, the training is aimed at promoting the concept of Gender Equality in workplaces. As you know, gender issue is quite a sensitive subject. Even in the so-called developed countries, female workers undergo some form of biases. A typical example is with the cases at Uber and Tesla. These two big industries were sued by some female staff members on account of gender inequality.

It’s almost a norm that staff members do not enjoy the same rewards and have the same access and opportunities because of their gender. Although many industries are gradually making significant progress especially in the IT sector, the gender gap in the country’s workforce is still prevailing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer, StarTimes Nigeria, Mr. Justin Zhang, applauded the initiative of the participants and the NUJ for a great organisation and emphasized on the need to train staff members on the subject and safety in the workplace. Accordingly, without gender equality in an organisation, mutual respect and teamwork (when necessary) will be null and difficult to achieve.

Speaking on safety, he emphasised the importance of creating a safe and healthy workplace to prevent injuries at workplaces. The safety measures prevalent in an organisation reflect their way of doing business and how you manage emergencies especially in cases of injuries or illnesses.  While many organisations have ignored the benefits of having this kind of training, it comes as one of the yuletide gifts from StarTimes.

According to Mr.Zhang, the training was fully sponsored by the Pay TV , in partnership with the Norwegian Union of Journalists and the Federation of African Journalists.

The CEO, while giving his speech appraised the importance of gender equality to industrial growth. Gone are the days when positions in organisations were highly dependent on gender. In recent times, it is unarguable that investing in gender equality is paramount to achieve a sustainable economic growth and development.

However, TSTV is yet to fulfil their own part of social responsibility…
