Survey: 43% of AI‑generated Code Changes still Break in Production

AI is rapidly becoming a standard tool for writing software but keeping that AI-written code stable in production is proving much harder.

A new survey of 200 senior site reliability and DevOps leaders at large enterprises in the US, UK and EU finds that 43% of AI-generated code changes still need manual debugging in live production environments, even after passing quality assurance and staging tests. The research comes from Lightrun’s 2026 State of AI-Powered Engineering Report, shared with VentureBeat ahead of publication.

The numbers point to a growing gap between how fast organizations are adopting AI coding tools and how prepared their infrastructure is to safely catch and correct mistakes once that code ships.

AI-written code is surging, but trust is lagging

AI coding assistants are now deeply embedded inside some of the world’s biggest engineering organizations. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said roughly 30% of the company’s code is written by AI, while Google CEO Sundar Pichai has said over 25% of new Google code is AI-generated, according to prior public comments cited in the VentureBeat report.

That acceleration is reshaping everything from software delivery timelines to how teams manage incidents. At the same time, the Lightrun survey suggests that the systems intended to keep AI-written changes safe in production are under strain.

  • 88% said they typically need two to three redeploy cycles.
  • 11% reported needing four to six redeploy cycles.

In comments cited by VentureBeat, Lightrun chief business officer Or Maimon described this “0%” finding as a signal that engineering teams are hitting a “trust wall” with AI adoption. The implication: while AI is helping write and modify more code, organisations are not yet confident enough in those changes to move quickly through release and validation.

The operational pressure created by AI-generated code is helping fuel rapid growth in AIOps, the set of tools and services used to manage, monitor and automate increasingly complex, software-driven environments.

According to the report, the AIOps market is valued at $18.95 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach $37.79 billion by 2031. This expansion reflects how enterprises are investing not just in AI to write code, but also in AI-powered systems to observe, analyse and respond when that code behaves unexpectedly in production.

Still, the survey’s findings suggest that, for many large organizations, those investments have not yet caught up with the volume and pace of AI-generated changes flowing into their environments. Even with QA and staging checks in place, nearly half of AI-driven code modifications end up needing human-led debugging after deployment, a costly and risky phase for discovering issues.

For now, enterprises appear to be leaning on repeated redeploy cycles and manual production troubleshooting to bridge that gap. Until they can reduce the number of cycles and cut the share of AI-generated changes that break in production, trust in AI as a reliable coding partner is likely to remain constrained.
