If you’re a frequent flyer who relies on your laptop or other electronic devices to stave off boredom in transit, there’s good news on the horizon. Should your journey to the United States originate from Abu Dhabi, you can now utilize your laptop during inflight hours when flying with Etihad airlines.
Earlier this year, a ban was imposed on numerous electronic gadgets aboard US-bound flights from Etihad, starting from Abu Dhabi International Airport. The prohibition was a result of emerging security concerns. Despite this, Etihad recently announced on its official website that the restrictions on its U.S.-bound flights have been lifted. This much-welcomed alleviation follows the incorporation of “enhanced security measures” at the Abu Dhabi airport, although specifics about these improvements remain undisclosed.
The ban was initially implemented following the unearthing of terrorist plots to build explosives that could be cleverly concealed in standard electronic devices, particularly laptops, larger than a typical phone. This discovery led the U.S. to put in place a prohibition on an array of electronic devices in flights originating from 10 designated airports in the Middle East and North Africa.
Though there were earlier intentions from U.S. officials to expand this ban to include all international flights landing in the U.S, these plans were later revised. Instead, flight providers and airports must now adhere to a series of stringent security checks, including the incorporation of tighter security standards introduced last week by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As a result, the affected flights were gradually removed from the ban list after they met the specified security checks and standards.
So far, only Etihad Airways has successfully had its Portable Electronic Devices (PED) restrictions lifted. The other airlines and airports remain on standby until they also meet these higher security requirements.
The steps taken by Etihad should serve as an inspiration to the other airlines restricted by the electronics ban. By putting in place appropriate security measures, they can ensure a secure and comfortable environment for their passengers and crew during flights.
