Tesla Will Continue To Pay Ukrainian Employees For At Least Three Months If Drafted To Fight

As seen in an email sent by electric vehicle company Tesla to employees in Europe, Middle East and Africa on Monday, the company will continue to keep Ukrainian employees who are conscripted to fight on its payroll for at least three months. It, however, remains unclear if employees in North America and other places will be beneficiaries of this plan.

After this three-month period, the company will be reassessing the situation of these employees so as to be able to decide the next steps to take regarding them.

Like other companies taking one or two actions against Russia in support of Ukraine, SpaceX, another one of Elon Musk’s companies, supported Ukraine by bringing in satellite communication infrastructure to help with the challenges that the conflict brought.

The email sent by Tesla did not fail to praise employees who helped in bringing Starlink satellite internet service to Ukraine amid the conflict. Tesla’s Energy team also contributed by assembling and providing lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (known as Tesla Powerwalls) needed to run Starlink equipment in Ukraine.

In the email, Tesla also mentioned that about 5,000 Tesla owners in Ukraine and other EV drivers could get free vehicle charging at some of its Supercharger stations in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, as its way of supporting the country in a time like this. The company does not operate in Ukraine. Other companies are also looking at the impact of the conflict on their employees, and some of them may take the steps being taken by Tesla.

As part of sanctions targeted at Russia, companies have begun to shut down their businesses in the country. Automakers such as General Motors and Ford have suspended their operations in Russia.

Tesla is yet to respond to comments on its decision to continue to keep Ukrainian employees on its payroll if they are called to fight.
