Google Reverses Decision: “Explicit” Adult Blogs Remain Unbanned

Early this week, news broke that Google planned to strictly enforce content regulations on its Blogger platform by banning blogs with explicit, adult-centric content — a move that quickly sparked controversy among its vast user base. However, the tech giant has abruptly hit the brakes on that decision, exhibiting flexibility in the face of vast public disapproval.

This sudden course reversal was officially communicated via a Google Product forum post, putting many anxious minds at rest. The potential impact of the revocation decision cannot be understated, as eliminating blogs with explicit content would have undoubtedly put a significant number of bloggers out of business.

The official statement from the Blogger Team is as follows:

Hello everyone,

This week, we announced a change to Blogger’s porn policy. We’ve had a ton of feedback, in particular about the introduction of a retroactive change (some people have had accounts for 10+ years), but also about the negative impact on individuals who post sexually explicit content to express their identities. So rather than implement this change, we’ve decided to step up enforcement around our existing policy prohibiting commercial porn.

Blog owners should continue to mark any blogs containing sexually explicit content as “adult” so that they can be placed behind an “adult content” warning page.

Bloggers whose content is consistent with this and other policies do not need to make any changes to their blogs.

Thank you for your continued feedback.

The Blogger Team

It’s important to note that this is a decision centered around a delicate balancing act— allowing individual self-expression while managing the risks of explicit content. Google’s rapid response shows the immense value they place on user feedback and their ability to adjust policies in a manner that satisfies both the company’s ethos and the demands of their blogger community.
