The Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas that’s reportedly sent shockwaves through the city and capturing national attention on New Year’s Day, 2025.
According to the Federal Bbreau of Investigation’s (FBI) investigative reports of the Cybertruck explosion by Spencer Evans, (the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas division), the incident, initially perceived as a bizarre accident, quickly revealed a deeper and more tragic story of personal turmoil and political grievances.
The investigation reports also revealed the Cybertruck bomber was Matthew Alan Livelsberger, a 37-year-old active-duty US Army Special Forces soldier from Colorado Springs. Livelsberger had rented the Cybertruck more than 800 miles away and driven it to Las Vegas on the morning of the explosion.
According to live witnesses compiled narration of the incident that occurred Just before noon, the Cybertruck was parked in front of the hotel near a glass entrance, began to smoke.
Within seconds, it erupted in a massive explosion, sending flames and debris into the air. Seven people, including hotel employees and tourists, were injured, though thankfully, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
As Evans and the other Las Vegas FBI field agents investigated the scene, they made a grim discovery: Livelsberger’s body was found inside the vehicle, deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Clark County Coroner’s office later confirmed the cause of death as suicide.
The investigation soon revealed a disturbing picture of Livelsberger’s state of mind that’s depicted from the note he left behind in the Cybertruck.
Evans reported the “bomber impacted an overwhelmed air of unanswered questions about Livelsberger’s suicidal wake up call that bore terror to seven other casualties outside Trump’s hostel with no like links to the traditional terrorism endorsement.”
Livelsberger’s suicidal wake up call was impacted by the effect of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — he was an active military veterans suffering from PTSD. “Livelsberger wrote that he needed to cleanse his mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve himself of the burden of the lives I took.”
In the days leading up to the incident, he had posted a series of increasingly love for the new president-elect Donald Trump and his campaign sponsored with enthusiastic messages on social media, filled with political rants and expressions of personal despair on how Trump’s prior tenure in office help his motive as a military personnel.
Livelsberger’s posts revealed a deep disillusional PTSD with the political climate and a sense of alienation from his community which explains why Elon Musk EV product was the tool for his suicidal wake up call.

His mental health struggles, fuelled by political grievances and personal turmoil, may have led him to seek a desperate and destructive way to express his frustrations. Evens’ report also hinted at “personal struggles, including marital problems and financial difficulties.”
