The US DHS and FBI Release In-Depth Report Charting Russians Cyber Attacks During the Presidential Elections

As the Obama administration implements stringent measures to penalize Russia’s alleged cyber interference in the US elections, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have published a scathing report. This document provides a meticulous examination of the actions of Russian government-sponsored hacking organizations, accused of pilfering data from the Democratic Party during the recent Presidential elections.

The consequential thirteen-page dossier speaks in explicit terms and identifies the actions of the Russian intelligence services as part of an ongoing campaign of cyber-enabled operations targeted at the US government and its civilians. The authors of the report included advice for technical indicators related to many of these operations, recommended mitigations, and also proposed steps of action to be taken in response to these indicators. They further provided details on how such incidents can be reported to the US government.

The release of this report is being viewed as a belated move by industry specialists, with the significant impact of the cyber activities already realized. However, others believe it validates the assertions made by private sector companies such as Microsoft and Yahoo over recent years. While digital threats from China and Russia used to carry the same weight, it appears that since the 2015 meeting between the US and Chinese Presidents, cyber attacks originating from China have drastically diminished. This leaves Russia under spotlight and intensifies scrutiny of its cyber activities.

Under pseudonyms such as Fancy Bears, the Russian government is implicated in orchestrating malware attacks on American and Western networks. In response to this alleged cyber onslaught, the US government has taken the drastic step of expelling 35 Russian diplomats from the country. The Russian government, on the other hand, has chosen not to retaliate in anticipation of a possible improvement in their relationship with the upcoming Donald Trump administration, seen to be relatively amicable towards President Putin. Russia has consistently rejected the accusations relating to any cyber attacks, but several reports worldwide suggest otherwise.

Following the foregoing analysis, the complete report is accessible below in its entirety. The content is expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the cyberthreat landscape faced by the US during the elections and its aftermath.
