The White House launched its official TikTok account named the “whitehouse” on Tuesday, gaining thousands of followers within an hour with the bio “Welcome to the Golden Age of America.” The move came as a surprise to many, especially considering the ongoing debates about the app’s future in the United States.
“Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation,” President Donald Trump said in the first video shared to the new TikTok account, marking the administration’s debut on the popular platform.
TikTok has become the go-to platform for reaching younger audiences. With millions of Americans scrolling through short videos daily, the White House clearly wants to be where the people are. It’s a smart move for getting their message directly to citizens without traditional media filters.
This is the administration’s first official TikTok account. Both Trump and Biden launched accounts during the 2024 presidential campaign, drawing observations as the leaders had previously raised national security concerns with the app.
While the administration is embracing TikTok, there’s still a sword hanging over the app’s head. Trump has so far delayed the implementation of a 2024 law that ordered TikTok to either to sell to non-Chinese buyers or be banned in the US, with three 90-day extensions.
Congress passed a law requiring TikTok to find non-Chinese owners or face a ban in the US. The concern is about National security risks due to the app’s Chinese ownership. Intelligence agencies have raised red flags about potential data collection and influence operations.
Trump initially called for the app to be banned in his first term but has since pushed back the potential ban deadline set by Congress multiple times.
TikTok has 170 million US users and has become integrated into business operations across the country. A study commissioned by TikTok’s US operator and conducted by Oxford Economics in late 2024 through early 2025, found that approximately 7.5 million businesses maintain active TikTok accounts.
The White House joining TikTok represents a shift in how the government communicates with citizens. Gone are the days when official announcements only came through press releases and formal speeches. Now, the administration can share updates, behind-the-scenes content, and direct messages to millions of Americans instantly.
By joining TikTok, the White House is acknowledging that reaching people where they already spend their time is more effective than expecting them to come to traditional media.
On one hand, intelligence agencies warn about TikTok’s security risks. On the other hand, the White House is now using it as an official channel. This mixed messaging might confuse regular Americans who’ve been hearing about potential bans for months.
One thing’s certain this move shows how important social media has become for modern means of communication. As if you want to reach millions of Americans, especially younger ones, TikTok is where you need to be.
Whether this account will last or become another casualty of the ongoing TikTok drama remains to be seen. For now, though, the White House is officially part of the TikTok world.
This US account on TikTok will be at an advantage and a step forward in the Trump’s administrations and the big question now is how they’ll use this powerful platform to connect with the American people.
The big picture could also be that TikTok is here to stay in the United States and threats of a ban may just be what they are afterall… just threats.
