In a bizarre yet intriguing event, Sanmay Ved, a former employee of Google, managed to purchase the Google.com domain recently. For a brief but significant minute, Ved became the proud owner of Google’s primary domain, a wild anomaly that you’d think was fodder for a techy April Fools’ joke.
Here’s how the story unfolds. Upon finding a flaw in the system, Ved was able to acquire the Google.com domain name for a mere $12 (or 2,300 Naira/1,200 Kenyan Shillings). Now, you might be thinking, “How can this be possible?” But screenshots of the cyber transaction from Ved’s detailed article on LinkedIn confirm that this unusual event genuinely happened.
During this minute-long transaction, the ownership of the prized domain name was duly transferred. However, it didn’t take much time for Google to reverse this unusual happening and reclaim what rightfully belonged to them. This minor hiccup didn’t mean Google took offence, though; on the contrary, in responding to Ved’s generous actions, Google refunded his money and rewarded him with an undisclosed cash sum for reporting the issue.
This took a heartwarming turn when Google discovered Ved’s plan to donate all his reward to charity. Touched by his gesture, the tech giant magnanimously decided to double the amount.
A quick glance at Ved’s LinkedIn profile shows his previous role as an “Googler.” For those unfamiliar with the term, “Googler” is a label used for employees of Google or its affiliates.
Interestingly, this isn’t the only unexpected domain-related activity from Google. The company recently bought the bizarrely-named domain abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvxyz.com. One can only speculate what the tech behemoth has in store with this puzzling acquisition.
