Threads said on Wednesday that it is launching an AI-powered feature that allows users to customise their feed. Users can temporarily specify what they would like to see more or less of in their feed by using the platform’s new “Dear Algo” function.
Meta’s latest With the help of Threads’ AI-powered Dear Algo function, users can use straightforward text instructions to tell the algorithm to alter what shows up in their feed.
Users must put “Dear Algo” in a public Threads post and then specify what they would want to see more or less of in order to utilise the feature. For instance, you may write “Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts” if you would want to see more content about well-known podcasts. After submitting a request, your feed will be modified for three days.
It’s important to keep in mind that since Dear Algo operates via public postings, other people can view your request and possibly repost it to use in their own feed. Some users may find this feature problematic because they may not want their requests to be made public. But according to Meta, it sees this as a means of introducing users to fresh discussions and subjects, transforming personalisation into a communal experience.
Threads outperforms its rivals by providing a feature that isn’t found on other platforms: the ability for users to temporarily alter what shows up in their feeds.
In a blog post, the firm stated, “Threads is where you go to keep up with what’s happening right now.” However, there are instances when your priorities shift quickly, and you want your Threads feed to reflect that. For example, you might want to see more threads about a live NBA game or fewer about a TV show you haven’t watched yet.
The new Dear Algo function goes beyond personalisation, even while Threads and its rivals, X and Bluesky, already provide users with a straightforward method to express their preferences with a “Not Interested” button. Additionally, X has a reputation for making Threads feel more real-time, which the feature might help with.
In the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom, Dear Algo is currently accessible. Threads intends to expand its reach to additional nations in the future.
The new feature’s release follows a market research firm’s report by a few weeks. In terms of daily mobile usage, Similarweb said that Threads has surpassed X. Over the past few months, the number of daily active users on the Threads mobile app for iOS and Android has continued to rise, despite X still controlling the Threads site.
According to the research, which was carried out in early January 2026, X has 125 million daily active users on mobile, compared to 141.5 million on Threads.
The way it operates
- Straightforward Prompting: “Dear Algo”, followed by your specific request (e.g., “Dear Algo, show me more about cooking” or “Dear Algo, I want less content about reality TV”), should be the first words of a new public Threads post.
- Temporary Tweak: For three days after it is uploaded, the AI modifies your “For You” feed in accordance with your requests.
- Shared Experience: Other users may notice your request and repost it to apply the same content choices to their own feeds because these posts are public.
- Meta presents the Discovery Tool as a means of rapidly adjusting your feed to events occurring in real time, such as avoiding spoilers for a new show or viewing more stuff during a live sports broadcast.
