Twitter is setting its first office in Africa and its going to be in Ghana. Twitter CEO; Jack Dorsey made this known to the public via a tweet where he thanked Ghana’s President; Nana Akufo-Addo. In his tweet, a link that leads to Twitter’s official blog  written by Kayvon Beykpour; Product Lead at the company and Uche Adegbite; Director of Product Management was included.

Jack Dorsey’s tweet reads, “Twitter is now present on the continent. Thank you Ghana and @NAkufoAddo. #TwitterGhana”.

The President of Ghana’ Nana Akufo-Addo responded to this tweet by saying, “The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news. Govt and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country. #TwitterInGhana #TwitterGhana”

The President also added via tweet that, “As I indicated to @Jack in our virtual meeting of 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the dev’t of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector. #TwitterInGhana #TwitterGhana” and “These are exciting times to be in, and to do business in Ghana. #TwitterInGhana #TwitterGhana”.

The question that is probably on the minds of many is “WHY GHANA?”

According to the information on Twitter’s official blog, the reason for citing its headquarters in Ghana is because “As a champion of democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Futhermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our services across Africa. Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabrics that support them…We still have much to learn but we are excited to listen, learn and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can’t wait for the next step on that journey”.

With Twitter in Africa, African can rest assured of Twitter contents that are made for them. Twitter’s coming to Africa promises to be one that will push the continent forward.
