Twitter recently launched its verification program and has already made mistakes with registering inauthentic profiles, Techbooky writes. This discovery was made by a data scientist, Conspirador Norteño — he revealed up to six accounts with Twitter’s blue badge. The social media company has reportedly flagged these illegitimate accounts.

According to the data scientist, these accounts does not have any shared tweet. Among the six suspended users, two accounts had profile pictures that appeared to originate from Stock gallery. It became more obviously wrong that these accounts were created on the same day, June 16th.

Twitter took note of Conspirador’s discovery with soluble actions. “We mistakenly approved the verification applications of a small number of inauthentic (fake) accounts, We have now permanently suspended the accounts in question, and removed their verified badge, under our platform manipulation and spam policy.”

Techbooky suggests Twitter’s verification program is likely to have been bugged with errors, whereby the social media security authentication is less secured and has issues with identifying inauthentic profiles.

Twitter recently accepted global use of its blue badge verification program with enlisted criteria for eligibility. This depicts the social media company had to adjust the criteria for applying for its blue badge which is exclusive for high profiled personnel. Still, none of these suspended accounts qualified to be awarded Twitter’s badge.

“These 976 accounts are part of an astroturf botnet consisting of (at least) 1212 accounts.” In line with Conspirador discovery — “The network is split into followers, which follow the aforementioned verified accounts as well as other members of the botnet, and followers, which are followed by the other bots.”

For contrast, these suspended accounts also had followers up to a thousand, these followers have a suspicious account as well. Some of these accounts were reportedly created in the space of four days — from June 16th to 20th. Note that these accounts depict it’s a perfect example of botnet-based technology.

Botnets are programmed to create automated accounts which are likely to use AI to generate profile pictures — this botnet reportedly created 1212 followers of these suspended accounts. It worth noting that Twitter suspended Five of these suspicious accounts while that last user deactivated the accounts itself before Twitter flags it.

The botnet-powered accounts on Twitter have been suspended. Still, The security measures the social media company recently modified is expected to be proactive in restricting counterfeit accounts. Likewise, the Twitter blue badge verification process is expected to secure processing countermeasures that detect inauthentic profiles before accrediting them.
