Twitter Will From Today Stop Counting @Replies In Its 140 Character Rule On Web And Mobile

It’s been a year since Twitter announced plans not to include media attachments and @ replies in its 140 character rule and since then little was heard of the actual implantation until it began testing it last September. Today though, they announced that the new rule will now apply to all web and mobile (iOS and Android) users.

But today’s update will change the way you view and send replies and in Twitter’s own words, conversations become more simplified in the following ways;

  • Who you are replying to will appear above the Tweet text rather than within the Tweet text itself, so you have more characters to have conversations.
  • You can tap on “Replying to…” to easily see and control who’s part of your conversation.
  • When reading a conversation, you’ll actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.

Frankly speaking though, these changes are welcome seeing as Twitter replies have become sometimes as interesting as the tweet itself. This is just like seeing an interesting post on Facebook and seeing what people are saying about it I the comments section and by making it easier to follow these threads, this is just the first of many changes to come.

At this time, we can’t rule out a possible and needed Edit button in future.

On the social side, Twitter is rolling out measures to combat abuse and fake news on its site too following complaints by users.
