Twitter Opens Its Verification Process To Virtually All Users

…a simplified Twitter badge application, profile previews About Tab labels, and profile pronouns are coming to Twitter.

Twitter announces forthcoming updates centred on automated accounts including a potential profile preview label and the most desired blue check badge that proves authentication. The short message media revived its public account verification program, which accredits its blue ticks on public accounts.

Twitter has a drafted list of criteria that certifies an average user for verification. Twitter users requesting verification are expected to have an active, notable, or authentic account supported with “public interest,” to outweigh its criteria.

Potential users enrolling for Twitter’s verification program are expected to either be a government official, a journalist, a news organization, an entertainer/Influencer, an activist/organizer, companies, or a sports athlete/Gaming.

Once approved by Twitter, the blue badge automatically appears on your profile as usual. But if it doesn’t appear, then Twitter thinks your account is not notably authentic. While the company consideration timing is lengthy, users can request another verification order within 30days of the initial request.

Overtime, Twitter has utilized this tool to promote security on its media, until critics overwhelmed its biased responsiveness. In 2017, Twitter reportedly practiced biased servicing — unethical racial discrimination that favoured white supremacists. The social media company had to suspend its account verification program until now.

After critics overruled the blue badge campaign, suggesting the social media company started endorsing other users randomly aiming to counter criticism. When Twitter Introduced this program in 2009, they intended to counter impersonation of high-profiled identities on its platform — at the time, the program was exclusive for high-profilers.

At the time verification was newly introduced, the process of requesting the blue badge was vague. By 2016, the program was accessible to global users for public use. While Twitter struggled with simplifying its verification policy overtime, they started kicking off verified accounts that iteratively violated its rules.

The social media company is also introducing extra preview changes that add extra details about a user — an additional About Tab on profile settings. Meanwhile, the final version of this feature is yet to be fully developed.

Still, the microblogging site could only confirm adding pronouns to its users’ profile for now, just like other social media platforms, including Slack, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. have reportedly used profile pronouns.

Very soon, an average user can apply for a verified Twitter badge. You can request a blue badge through your settings tab — Twitter writes back to user’s requests in less than a few days.
