Encompassing the vision of progressing technological potential, ride-hailing giant Uber recently acquired the groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) startup, Geometric Intelligence. With this acquisition, Uber doesn’t just shop for AI technology, but also welcomes aboard the entire 15-member squad from the startup, making a powerful statement in the tech world.

Incorporation of the acquired team has coincided with Uber’s unveiling of its ambitious new project – Uber AI Labs. This research-focused arm of the company is set to elevate the efficiency of its operations, primarily in the fields of autonomous vehicle technology and food delivery system. The newly-inducted team from Geometric Intelligence will shoulder the operations in this emerging kernel of innovation.

Geometric Intelligence has a relatively short but influential history. Founded in October 2014 by an impressive coalition of academics, including cognitive scientist Gary Marcus from New York University, machine learning professor Zoubin Ghahramani from the University of Cambridge, professor of computer science Kenneth Stanley from the University of Central Florida, and Douglas Bemis, a fresh NYU PhD graduate in neurolinguistics. The startup’s expertise lies at the juncture of different AI fields, making it a strategic acquisition for Uber’s diversified interests.

Based on credible reports, Gary Marcus, one of the founders of Geometric Intelligence, is poised to lead the new lab. With him on board as an Uber director, the team is expected to operate from Uber’s San Francisco base in California. Allocating their commitment to Uber’s newest venture may imply a reduction in their active roles in their respective academic institutions, indicating the pressure of this dynamic shift from academic to corporate.

To stay up-to-date with Uber’s journey and advancements into the AI sector, follow this agitating storyline on TechBooky. As Uber takes pioneering strides in technology, we may witness a giant leap in the innovation of transportation and associated services.
