In a significant move for city-logistics, Uber Eats has announced a partnership with robotics firm Starship Technologies to begin food deliveries via autonomous sidewalk/pavement robots in the U.K., starting later this year. The rollout will launch in the Leeds and Sheffield areas in December before expanding across Europe in 2026 and the U.S. in 2027.
Starship, which already operates around 3,000 of its six-wheeled delivery bots across 270 locations globally, brings a track record of short-route logistics (typically under two miles and 30 minutes per delivery) to Uber Eats’ massive network.
For Uber Eats, the deal reflects a broader strategy in that instead of relying solely on human couriers, the platform is increasingly embracing robot partners, whether pavement droids or self-driving vehicles. Earlier collaborations include Serve Robotics (in the U.S.) and Avride.
The implications are many. For one, this approach could significantly reduce the cost of “last-mile” delivery, one of the most expensive parts of the e-commerce and food-delivery chain. If the bots operate reliably and safely in urban contexts, the savings and efficiency gains could be substantial. For cities, it also means fewer cars, fewer bikes and a smaller carbon footprint provided the robots are managed well and integrated thoughtfully.
Still, challenges loom in pavement space, pedestrian safety, regulation, weather conditions and public perception all matter. Starship must prove that its robots can handle crowded pavements and unpredictable conditions. Uber Eats will need to ensure convenience and reliability remain strong missed or delayed orders could quickly turn public opinion against robotic try-outs.
All told, the deal signals a practical shift in how we think about delivery, less about fast-moving cars and more about intelligent, compact machines navigating our pavements. With this U.K. pilot, Uber Eats and Starship are taking a meaningful step toward that future.
