Uber Implements In-App Tipping Globally as a Step Towards Rebuilding Relationship with Drivers

Uber, the $70 billion ride-hailing startup, has introduced a significant feature on its platform: the option for in-app tipping. This change serves to enhance the relationship with its drivers, particularly in countries where drivers have been protesting over low fares, such as Nigeria.

The company perceives this functionality as a reconciliatory move amid the numerous scandals that have recently plagued the firm. Although these controversies might have significantly damaged the company’s rapport with its drivers, Uber recognizes the essential role that they play in its exponential growth.

Subsequent to the abrupt exit of Uber’s CEO, Travis Kalanick, the company’s co-founder and Chairman, Garrett Camp, expressed the organization’s renewed commitment to its drivers. He penned down his thoughts in a post, stating, “A friend recently asked me, ‘What went wrong?'” the answer is, we hadn’t been attentive enough to those critical personas, our team, and particularly, our drivers.”

He further expounded, “In an extremely competitive market, it’s all too easy to solely focus on growth, as opposed to making the time to ensure you’re treading on the right pathway. Presently, it’s time to take a pause and reflect on what truly matters: providing reliable transportation for 65 million riders, offering flexible work options to 2 million drivers, and fostering a company culture that we can all be proud of.”

In locations like Nigeria, for instance, Uber has relatively reduced ride fares by nearly 40 percent to motivate increased usage. However, this move appears to have overlooked the fact that its primary competitor, Taxify, offers more driver-friendly earnings. Consequently, a growing number of drivers are abandoning Uber, claiming it no longer satisfies their basic monthly necessities, while Uber retains 25 percent of the fares.

Nevertheless, integrating tipping into Uber’s app may not be a disadvantage. The main hurdle lies in the culture of tipping; it varies greatly across different countries. The question now is whether riders will tip in substantial amounts to appease the drivers. In certain regions, this might only result in marginal improvements at best.

However, this new approach from Uber represents a bold step towards mending the deteriorating relationship with its drivers, ensuring they feel valued and recognized for their pivotal role within the company.
