Microsoft announced on Tuesday with the intention of expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure, it intends to invest $30 billion in the United Kingdom by 2028.

With a combined investment of over $40 billion, OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and other major US tech companies have committed to building the UK’s artificial intelligence infrastructure in the upcoming years. The huge investments were revealed during this week’s official visit by US President Donald Trump to the UK.

Microsoft’s commitment in pledging $30 billion to assist the UK’s AI infrastructure over the next three years, accounting for the largest portion of spending. This is the biggest financial commitment the corporation has ever made in the nation.

The investment includes $15.1 billion for its businesses in the United Kingdom and an additional $15.5 billion for capital growth/capital projects to expand the UK’s cloud and AI infrastructure, according to Microsoft. With more than 23,000 sophisticated graphics processing units (GPUs), the company said the investment will allow it to construct the “largest supercomputer” in the United Kingdom in collaboration with the British cloud computing company Nscale.

Microsoft’s investment was hailed by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer as a “powerful vote of confidence in UK’s leadership in AI.”

Salesforce, Google, Nvidia, and OpenAI have revealed plans to invest billions of dollars in AI in the nation. The fresh investment amounts add up to more than $40 billion.

The funding pledge coincides with President Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom. King Charles and Queen Camilla will welcome Trump at Windsor Castle on Wednesday after he arrived in the United Kingdom on Tuesday night.

The focus of his visit is on U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is under pressure to stabilise the nation following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner due to a housing tax scam and a significant cabinet change.

In addition to supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs and bolstering our digital infrastructure, this pledge will guarantee that Britain stays at the forefront of global innovation as we carry out our Plan for Change.

Microsoft President Brad Smith stated on a Tuesday call with reporters that his views on the United Kingdom have become flexible over time. He has previously attacked the nation for trying to stop the computer giant’s 2023 acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, a video game developer, for $69 billion. Later that year, the U.K.’s competition regulator approved the deal.

Smith admitted that he hasn’t always been upbeat about the business environment in the United Kingdom. “But I am really encouraged by the steps that the government has taken over the last few years,” he continued.

Smith stated that this kind of investment would have been unthinkable just a few years ago due to the regulatory environment at the time and because there simply wasn’t the need or demand for this kind of large AI investment.

In an announcement released late Tuesday, the government claimed that Starmer and Trump are set to sign a new agreement on Wednesday “to unlock investment and collaboration in AI, Quantum, and Nuclear technologies.”

Along with partners Nscale and U.S. infrastructure company CoreWeave, Nvidia announced on Tuesday that it would invest £11 billion ($15 billion) in the United Kingdom.

Nvidia announced plans to install 120,000 Blackwell GPU processors in the United Kingdom as part of the investment agreement, which would be the company’s largest deployment in Europe to date.

Before the announcement, David Hogan, head of enterprise sales for Nvidia in Europe, told reporters, “This will truly make the U.K. an AI maker, not an AI taker.”

Google also declared that it would invest £5 billion ($6.8 billion) in the development of AI in the United Kingdom.

The corporation will open a new data centre in Waltham Cross, which is around 12 miles (19 kilometres) north of downtown London, as part of the commitment.

The new facility, according to Google, will assist satisfy the rising demand for the company’s AI-powered services, which include Google Cloud, Workspace, Maps, and Search. It further stated that 8,250 jobs are expected to be created by the investment per year at UK companies.

With “Stargate U.K.”, a specialised U.K. version of its enormous Stargate AI joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle, OpenAI is also demonstrating its significant commitment to Britain.

On the U.K. project, the Microsoft-backed AI firm is working with Nscale and Nvidia.

In order to facilitate the adoption of AI in the United Kingdom, OpenAI said that it would install up to 8,000 GPUs early in the upcoming year, with the possibility of eventually increasing capacity to over 31,000 GPUs.

Newcastle, a city in the North of England, is set to host Cobalt Park, the first significant development under Stargate U.K.

Salesforce revealed intentions to increase its investment in the United Kingdom to $6 billion, increasing its $4 billion commitment from 2023.

Salesforce CEO, Marc Benioff said that with this large investment, we are strengthening our longstanding commitment to the UK.

In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Zahra Bahrololoumi, the president of Salesforce’s U.K. division, stated that President Trump’s visit to the country “reaffirms the very important relationship between the U.K. and U.S.”

In the meantime, CoreWeave revealed an additional £1.5 billion investment to expand the capacity and operations of its AI data centre in the United Kingdom. With this commitment, CoreWeave has invested a total of £2.5 billion in the nation.

Stargate UK, was the most recent launch of “OpenAI for Countries,” a Stargate effort aimed at accelerating the development of AI infrastructure in the commercial sector globally, was also revealed. Bloomberg said earlier this month that OpenAI had expanded its infrastructure into India.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has teamed up with Nvidia and Nscale for its Stargate expansion into the UK.

Cobalt Park near Newcastle, which will be a part of the recently established “AI Growth Zone” in the northeast of England, is one of the locations where the business plans to base its AI initiatives.

The UK government anticipates that over 5,000 new employment and £30 billion in private investment will result from the dedicated AI zone.

“World-class researchers, millions of ChatGPT users, and a government that immediately recognised the potential of this technology are all located in the UK, which has long been a pioneer in AI,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

“Stargate UK builds on this foundation to help boost economic growth, increase productivity, and accelerate scientific breakthroughs.” This collaboration illustrates our common belief that AI may provide opportunities for individuals and businesses throughout the United Kingdom when the proper infrastructure is in place.

Salesforce revealed plans to invest $6 billion in its UK operations by 2030, while cloud computing provider CoreWeave pledged £1.5 billion, increasing the company’s total UK commitment to £2.5 billion.

In the meantime, Nvidia unveiled new $15 billion AI factories in collaboration with CoreWeave, Nscale, and Microsoft. According to the business, the manufacturers will install 120,000 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs in nearby data centres, making it the biggest roll-out in the nation’s history.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, stated that the UK is “building the infrastructure for the AI industrial revolution – advancing science, transforming industries, and creating new economic opportunities.”

Google recently said that it will be investing £5 billion in the UK over two years, including the inauguration of its data facility in Hertfordshire.
