With the continued advancement of companies like Oculus VR (now owned by Facebook) and Sony’s Project Morpheus, virtual reality (VR) has expanded beyond its gaming roots. This technology is now shifting the paradigms of design, entrepreneurship, and tech industries alike.

In response to this change, Alchemy VR, a groundbreaking entertainment studio based in London, launched, with a mission to create cutting-edge VR content compatible with both the Rift and Morpheus platforms. As an offshoot of Atlantic Productions, an award-winning English production company with Emmy and BAFTA accolades, Alchemy VR extends its parent company’s tradition of harnessing the latest technology to deliver compelling non-fiction narratives.

Anthony Geffen, Atlantic’s CEO and creative director, recognizes VR’s long and storied history. However, he believes that recent advancements have finally ushered in an era of digital exploration with limitless potential.

Their flagship VR project, developed with legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough, gives users an interactive tour of earth’s prehistoric life. This world is an entirely computer-generated landscape, showcasing Alchemy VR’s commitment to immersive storytelling.

Alchemy VR’s Phil Harper acknowledges the unique challenges posed by VR’s enveloping nature. He emphasizes the importance of fine-tuning the storytelling process to provide an immersive, engaging narrative.

The initial VR content from Alchemy VR places the viewer within the story. Led by Attenborough, users travel through recreated habitats of the earliest creatures. This choice to use computer-generated environments provides makers with unprecedented control over the visual experience, and it makes use of accumulated resources from prior 3D projects.

Alchemy VR’s debut project represents just the first step in a broader plan. Additional educational VR content is already in the pipeline, including collaborations with the University of Arkansas to reproduce marvels of the ancient world, and talks of future partnerships with networks like BBC and PBS are ongoing.

According to Geffen, VR’s success depends on the richness and depth of its content. Alchemy VR aims to lead the way by providing immersive experiences that transport viewers into new worlds. They imagine VR experiences that are continually enhanced with updates and expanded features, marking a departure from the traditional film and television models. As Geffen puts it, “Once a project goes live, it’s not the end…Instead of sequels, there’s just updates.”

While the Alchemy VR team recognizes the rapid pace of technological developments in VR, they believe content holds the key to unlocking its full potential. As Geffen puts it, “The world wants to go on a journey in VR,” and Alchemy VR is set to offer the ticket for that exploration.
