Great news for small and medium-sized merchants in Nigeria, as Visa has innovatively introduced a cost-effective method for merchants to accept payments. The multinational financial services corporation has launched mVisa, a revolutionary mobile payment system designed to provide a secure, affordable, and highly convenient method of conducting transactions.

Valued for its simplicity and ease of use, mVisa has collaborated with four prominent banks in Nigeria – Access Bank, Ecobank, United Bank for Africa and Zenith Bank. These institutions will integrate mVisa into their systems in the coming weeks, making Nigeria the first market to offer this cross-border payment solution to its customers.

Owned by a global payments company, mVisa’s unique mobile payment service enables users to swiftly pay for goods using their mobile phones. Here’s how it works: customers simply enter a merchant’s number into their cell phones, and the payment gets instantly debited from the consumer’s account straight into the merchant’s. Both parties receive immediate notifications, ensuring a seamless and hassle-free transaction process.

Andrew Torre, President for Visa, Sub-Saharan Africa, spoke on the exciting possibilities the service offers. Highlighting its transformative potential for small and medium-sized merchants, Torre pointed out that “mVisa gives them the freedom to accept payments in a manner that is not just convenient, but also secure and affordable. The fundamental aim of mobile payments is to facilitate easy transactions, allowing digital trading accessibility to everyone, everywhere across Nigeria and the entire African continent.”

Falling in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless policy, this development is expected to majorily contribute to the digital financial revolution in Nigeria. Uzoma Dozie, the Diamond Bank’s Group Managing Director and CEO, emphasized how the bank’s customers will greatly benefit from the simplicity and convenience offered by this mobile payment system.

Other participating banks also echoed the positive sentiments. For instance, Gbolahan Joshua, the Chief Information Officer of Fidelity Bank, hailed mVisa as an innovative idea which amalgamates the typical mobile phone with a user-friendly payment solutions plan. Meanwhile, China Ezirim, E-Business Group Head of Firstbank, described the introduction of mVisa as part of the bank’s strategy to provide reliable, secure and convenient payment options to customers.

This new mobile payment system doesn’t just benefit banks and merchants, but also the Nigerian population at large. Offering numerous advantages over the conventional POS system, which often prove expensive, it’s expected that many Nigerians will embrace mVisa. No more scrambling for change, long queues at the ATM, or standing in the scorching sun waiting to get paid. With mVisa, transactions are expected to be far smoother, quicker, and more comfortable.
