Watch out for the new LG wrist watch

Among the Android Wear smartwatches unveiled at Google’s developer conference in June, the Moto 360 received the most attention for its unique, circular watchface, distinguishing it from the square designs of the Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch. However, LG was getting ready to launch its sequel – the round-faced LG G Watch R.

The preview provided by a reliable insider was initially unlisted on LG Mobile Global’s YouTube channel. Key details were missing to keep some information for the official reveal, but it was clear that the watch would feature a circular display, multiple new watchfaces, and a button on the side. Unlike the original G Watch, the R also showcased features such as a digital step counter, distance meter, and a compass. Additionally, it appeared that LG was teasing a full-circle display, perhaps in response to Moto 360’s black bar at the bottom of their circular display.

LG’s rapid introduction of the G Watch R only 2.5 months after their original model was indicative of their strategy. Typically, product development cycles can extend over several months, or even a year or more depending on the device. This suggests that LG was developing the G Watch R concurrently with the original square model, possibly as a more refined model to satisfy early adopters and troubleshoot issues. Now, all the momentum and anticipation built by Motorola could potentially be overshadowed by the introduction of the G Watch R. Whether attributed to fortunate timing or strategic planning, it certainly indicated an intensification of competition in the smartwatch industry.

Indeed, LG was not the only manufacturer with new launches on the horizon. ASUS teased its square-shaped smartwatch for the IFA, HTC was working on a release for later in the year, and Samsung could potentially launch another Gear iteration in time for the holiday season. The tech industry was also buzzing with rumors about an Apple watch. The Moto 360 may have been the most appealing smartwatch at the time, but the influx of competitors threatened its position at the top.
