Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event: all the rumors on the Fold, Flip and Watch - The Verge

It’s almost time for this year’s summer launch event – The Samsung Unpack Event. On August 10th at 9 AM ET, the company will hold its August Galaxy Unpacked event. This comes one year and one day after last year’s event that centred on foldables. If reports are correct, we may expect a comparable number of announcements, including a pair of foldable devices—the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4—a new lineup of smartwatches with the Galaxy Watch 5, and perhaps some new earbuds.

Samsung has essentially shown us what foldables will look like in its promotional photos and official launch trailer for its August 10th release. Additionally, Samsung’s head of smartphones teased a “new Samsung Galaxy foldable” in a blog post on the launch. We are also fairly convinced that the Watch 5 will be shown soon given the sheer volume of leaks that have occurred. We also learned about a new set of truly wireless earbuds last year, the Galaxy Buds 2, and we anticipate learning about the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro this year. A significant last-minute leak seems to show they are prepared for the event itself after we saw some renders of these earlier this month.

Over time, Samsung has taken advantage of its summer launch events to launch a new generation of Galaxy Note smartphones. However, it completely skipped over the release of the Galaxy Note 21 last year and announced that the brand would be discontinued earlier this year. The Note lineup’s distinguishing features have instead been incorporated into the more expensive Galaxy S models, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra featuring a Note-inspired appearance and an integrated S Pen stylus.

Don’t anticipate the announcement of Note 22 at this event but here is what Samsung might simply just be offering.

GALAXY Z FOLD 4

With the larger screen size of a tablet and the portability of a conventional smartphone, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices aim to bridge this gap. That doesn’t seem to be changing for the fourth generation of foldables, which like last year appears to match a 7.6-inch internal folding display with a 6.2-inch cover display, per a leaked list of specifications shared by Twitter leaker Ice Universe.

GALAXY Z FLIP 4

The next model in Samsung’s line of clamshell foldables, the Z Flip 4, is rumoured to receive a year’s worth of minor enhancements. A comparable device to the Flip 3 is depicted in what appear to be official press renders of the Flip 4, which were leaked by Evan Blass. On the back, there are two cameras and a small exterior notification display in a two-tone design. Internally, it appears like another hole-punch notch will be used in place of an under-display camera.

GALAXY WATCH 5

The Galaxy Watch 5 may be the device on this list for which we know the most about what to anticipate. This year it appears that we will be receiving a Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro — and there’s no physical rotating bezel in sight. Last year’s Watch 4 range was separated into the ordinary Watch 4 and the Watch 4 Classic (which came with a fan-favourite revolving bezel).

Beginning in July, the two smartwatches’ images were leaked by Evan Blass. The Watch 5 basic will be available in two smaller sizes, popularly assumed to be 44mm and 40mm, in accordance with last year’s Watch 4, while the Watch 5 Pro appears to only be available in one larger 45mm size (which would supposedly allow it to squeeze in a bigger battery).

GALAXY BUDS PRO 2

The Galaxy Buds Pro 2 hadn’t received many leaks up until this week when reports revealed what claimed to be official images and information regarding the earbuds. According to this report, the Buds Pro 2 will have an upgraded active noise cancelling system that can algorithmically mute “even the strongest ambient sounds.”   Additional features include IPX7 waterproofing, 10mm drivers, 360-degree audio, Bluetooth 5.3, and an eight-hour battery life that can be increased to 29 hours with the use of a case. Given that the Galaxy Buds 2 claimed 7.5 hours of non-ANC battery life and five hours with ANC turned on, we’re guessing that eight hours of battery life is without ANC.

Even while Samsung’s announcements frequently become public before events like these, there is always a chance the South Korean company may have a few surprises up its sleeves. Could the company reveal new laptops? Some new smart home features for SmartThings? Or even the comeback of Galaxy Home Bixby smart speakers? Although the last one is most unlikely our fingers remain crossed for what the company will be introducing tomorrow.
