Voice Chat, a new feature that allows group members to communicate live via audio while still sending messages in the same chat, was introduced by Meta-owned WhatsApp.
Using live audio in group chats is now simpler and more smooth thanks to a new feature that WhatsApp has included. Users can now join a voice conversation without leaving the group or switching to a voice call, according to the Meta-owned instant messaging app. Previously exclusive to large groups, this capability is now available in all group conversations. Voice conversations are encrypted from beginning to end, just like individual conversations.
Voice chats are accessible for groups of any size, according to WhatsApp. By going to the bottom of the chat and swiping up until the Swipe up to talk message displays, any member of the group can initiate a voice chat. WhatsApp will show Release to talk after a few seconds of holding, followed by a Connect option that activates voice chat.
With this version, Voice Chat can now accommodate groups of any size, going beyond its previous cap of 33 to 256 participants. A chat can be started by any member, and it starts quietly without alerting other users. Participants are free to arrive or depart at any moment.
According to the messaging app owned by Meta, initiating a voice conversation does not alert or call any members of the group chat. Individuals are free to enter and exit the hangout area as they see fit. For convenient access to call controls, these chats will remain pinned at the bottom of the chat window. In the meanwhile, new members can see who else is already in and join voice chat whenever they’d like.
Voice chats on WhatsApp are automatically encrypted from beginning to end, just like personal calls and messages, in accordance with its strict privacy regulations. It asserts that not even the business itself is able to read the contents of voice or chat conversations.
The feature is presently available on both the iOS and Android versions of WhatsApp, according to Gadgets 360 staff. You might not notice it immediately because it might take a few days for it to be accessible to all WhatsApp users.
This expands on the previous discovery of other WhatsApp features under development, such as the option to choose the download quality for media auto-downloads, sticker reactions for media and messages, and on-device message translation using a language pack that has been downloaded.
How it works
For ease of management, the voice chat remains visible at the bottom of the group chat once it has begun.
Participants can see who is currently connected and join or exit the conversation at any time.
Like standard WhatsApp calls and messages, all voice chats are protected by end-to-end encryption.
How to Begin a Voice Conversation
Launch the group chat.
In the upper right corner, tap the voice chat icon.
Click on “Start Voice Chat.”
Instead of a call, others get a push message to join.
Who is in the chat is displayed in a banner at the bottom.
You can only use the function on your primary device. Through the Calls tab and chat header, you can see who is participating even if you are not in the chat. From the group info page, you can mute call alarms and group messaging. If no one joins within 60 minutes or if everyone departs, voice chats immediately cease. Tap “leave voice chat” to end the conversation.
WhatsApp announced that over the next several days, the feature will be available to users of iOS and Android worldwide.
